WOW !!!!!! Nice article, thanks for posting it. That was the Gentry built boat, the one that was built by Rudy Ramos, at rayson Craft in Calif. to Tom`s specifications. The boat delaminated in that race, and was sold to John Haines of Haines Hunter boats. There are lots of stories I have written in these threads about that race and that boat. There were only two ever built. This one was red Metal Flake, and the other was Silver Metal Flake which was never raced. The decks were pretty cool looking, real Calif. look and style.

and this Hawaii what was? It seems a Scarab with a different deck.....
Tom (and you?) drove it at New Orleans race in March 1983.

WOW !!!!! again, you always amaze me with your knowledge of the sport we love, thank you. Yes this was a new Scarab, I almost forgot about, it has a long story with it as well. The boat was rigged by the Gentry team in Calif. with Freddie Miller and Dick Banks. Power naturally since I was there was Kiekhaefer Aeromarine. First time we tested the boat in Fond du lac the boat was horrible, and it was a time when we were experimenting with different degrees of rake in the propellers, as well as various new gear ratio`s so we should have been fast out of the box, but were not. We tryed everything to get the boat to run but could barely break 80 mph mark. We tried raising and lowering X dimension etc etc etc. we weighed the boat and all was correct, finally after two solid days of running we checked the bottom with a staright edge and she had a huge hook in her, so bad that we sent her back to Larry Smith in Calif. to fix and blueprint. When we received her back in Fond du lac first run she ran almost 90 mph, so we were now back on track. The next big step was we installed a pair of Kiekhaefer Super charged motors, yes supercharged. The motors were 468 cu in with roots type blower and dual four barrel carbs. Motors I think were almost 800 hp. They were very secret motors and experimental. We went to New Orleans with them in the boat, running over 90 mph. If I am not mistaken I think the race was canceled due to bad weather, we then went to Key West for the worlds and blew a motor. I have no idea where the boat ended up, it was beautiful, and was a two man cockpit. Another lost Scarab accounted for.

Many thanks to the European correspondents. Marco, Graham, and Nigel for the dilligent work and heart felt love of the sport of Offshore. I know where to go for my historical research when I start my book.

I think I remember that boat in Key West. Was that the one that didn't have the rub rail on it? The deck was carefully fitted to the hull if I remember correctly. After the first test the boat had a lot of carbon soot on the transom.

Yes it did. It went from Barry McMillan to Doug Bricker, who raced it as Taurus, before going to Brian Fisher as Camstar.

Whiplash was a different boat...it went to Geoff Dicieri who raced it as Courage and then to Tony Low who raced it as Force.

Midstar was built in about 1976 and raced with 3 crew, with a carbied Mercruiser 496, while Whiplash was built in 1977 and raced with 2, and had a fuel injected Mercruiser 496.

They were great boats and at one point in about 1977 were the "big" boats of Australian offshore, before Peter Dean reappeared and Whippy's Eagle and Hainesy's Eagle evolved.

Both Midstar and Camstar carried Cigarette logos but I have a feeling they were built here in Australia from a mould owned by Peter Dean.

Some great pics above. I recall tracking Wyld Cat ( a 25 Cougar Kevin Wyld built in about 1976) down in southern Brisbane in the mid late 1980s..it had been sitting in the weather for a few years and was pretty far gone.

great gut the late Brian Fisher,i worked for him when he had the 28ft boat,he then built a cat 1 boat that was a flop.
Was his 28ft the ex Dean Magnum that raced the "Cigg" when Glass had her?

pete60 08-28-2008 07:10 AM

Rob

No, Dean's Magnum 28 was a different boat and predated the Whiplash/Midstar twins by quite a few years. It was rigged with twin Mercruisers. Dean sold it Dick Rowe in Sydney who raced it on and off for a while. I assume it met a similar fate to other great race boats and became a pleasure boat.

Steve Searle bought the cat from Brian and brought it to Qld, he rigged it with diesels but it just never got going. It was finally sold off to someone who was going to use it a a base for a houseboat! Steve transplanted the cockpits onto his 40 Cigarette mono.

that boat only raced once? at St kilda, built by Ramsey?, never got up on the plain? Any photos of it?

pete60 08-29-2008 06:39 AM

No, unfortunately. I'll see if Steve has. It was the boat built by Ramsey. It certainly did get up on the plane with two Detroit diesels but it was never a front runner. The boat had been sitting at Kev McCarroll's in Shepparton for a while before Steve got it.
