Wow I remember most of those!! What a terrible waste of all that historic machinery!!

Dude! Sweet! 12-18-2007 01:49 PM

Heart breaking to be sure!

Black Tornado 12-18-2007 05:29 PM

All these boats are found near Massa in the north of the Tuscany.
Only 20 km from Massa there is another "cemetery";
at Viareggio.
Soon I will post the photos.

As promised,the "cemetery" of Viareggio.
But it would not deal with a true cemetery. In the intents of the actual owner of these old glories, the Team Binautica, there is the intention to prepare these boats for a future vintage championship.
There are CUV-Shead mono,CUV-Peters cat,Cougar cat, Planatec-Shead mono and Cigarette.

Breaks my heart to see the mighty Thuraya sitting like that... Is Panatta still running the boat at all?

Marco is that the Planatec hull on the left and the old Paul Picot cougar on the right?

Black Tornado 12-21-2007 10:56 AM

Just those,Nigel.
The others are,a CUV mono former Della Valle,a CUV-Peters cat former Johnny Lambs or Fratelli Rossetti I think, the yellow Lamborghini onother Cougar former Bagutta modified and the famous Thuraya former SDA.
About the Cigarette I think it's a 38' but without history pratically.
It's absent a Jaguar cat , Paul Picot of Gioffredi that I thinks will go to take photos in the next days.

MF 12-21-2007 11:57 AM

What a Waste !!! I remember watching and reading articles on magazines on These Boats !!

PS
Marco, whose 38 is that one ? Has it raced ?

Dude! Sweet! 12-21-2007 12:37 PM

Marco is the yellow CUV Dino Biachi still there? Any idea wether that boat or Caldente's boat was the old San Bennedeto CUV?

So Hurricane was one of Delle Valle's boats?

I emailed the guy up in Canada, but haven't heard anything yet. I'm going to try to call him after Christmas.

If I don't get the chance over the weekend... Buona Natale Marco and Merry Christmas to all!

I think it competed in P1. I'm don't look a lot the new powerboat racing championships, therefore I am not very informed on these boats.

About the yellow Dino Bianchi I think it's still there but not in that "cemetery".
The Caldente's boat it seems was the old San Benedetto of the son of Angelo Spelta,Damiano,in 1987.
The white CUV called Hurricane was the 41' tri-engines of Della Valle Eberhard in 1986,then became Missoni. If I remember well.

Merry X-mas to you and every people on OSO!!!

caldente 12-21-2007 04:30 PM

Hello Sean,
Panatta and his CUV Thuraya were 3rd in the Anzio leg of the Italia Powerboat Series just behind Renato Guidi 2nd, with his 41' CUV with Seatek engines and the 38'Donzi OSG 1st.
I'm still thinking to race my CUV in that series for the next year but I 'm very busy with the old race cars.
Marco,
if you have some info regarding my CUV's history i'll be happy to know it.
Thanks
and Merry Christmas to all
Patrick

Dude! Sweet! 12-21-2007 04:59 PM

Patrick! Merry Christmas! I'd been meaning to email you for months! I was wondering how your boat was doing and whether you'd had time to race it. In many ways I still regret not following through on our discussions, but the Camaro is in Australia now (racing this weekend as a matter of fact)...

Glad to hear that Thuraya is still competing. We don't get any european coverage other than Powerboat P1 here. And even that is after season's end, so really not too encompasing.

Patrick, your 38' CUV I think was built in 1983 as the second 38' for Della Valle.
At that time was in red-white colours of the sponsorship Rothmans. Was the boat that mounted the V8 Marathons. In 1984 Della Valle started with the new V12 Lambo with a new 38' driving it alternatively with the other Ego-Cinzano Bianco 38' equipped with the V8.
In 1986 Della Valle was fully involved with the program with Lamborghini and he bought a new 41' equipped with three Lambo small block. the old 38' with the Marathons was sold to Alessandro Zodo that renamed it Trussardi in 1986,Dimensione Uomo in 1987 and repainted fully in white mounting a big wing over the stern Biancaneve in 1988.
Not sure what became it after. According to some info that I have
in 1990 the cicuit champs Maurizio Darai and Jacopo Carrain drove it in the first edition of the first Endurance race Venezia to Montecarlo repainted in pink and renamed GB Pedrini.
in 1991-92 was Pago Fruit-Gruppo dalle Carbonare with Carrain.

Here in winged version as Biancaneve in 1988.

Hello Marco
Thanks for all the info regarding my CUV,
I just sold it two weeks ago to british racer Tim Gimshawn to compete the Round Britain race. The boat will have the 558 race number like years ago
I hope i'll be able to buy another CUV in the future
Patrick

ufix1 06-01-2008 10:26 AM

Black Tornado 06-01-2008 01:13 PM

ufix1 welcome aboard!
You can find some of CUVs in this thread where I had begun to tell their history.
http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...n+boats&page=9

ufix1 06-03-2008 06:39 AM

thanks black tornado I really do not know why old race boats are considered not good. If you see last Roundbritian winner Fabio Buzzi Is racing this year's round britian with the old CESA. And there will also be CUV. If you take alook on the results of last year's Italia powerboat series the CUV's Where 2nd and 3rd. I really hope that there will be more classic racing boats still racing .

Thanks

Black Tornado 06-03-2008 04:26 PM

They consider not good the old race boats only the peoples that don't have Historical memory.

ufix1 06-04-2008 07:21 AM

I have to agree!!! Where did you get all that info? something tells e you are interested in classic powerboats. lol
What exactly caused CUV to stop?

Black Tornado 06-04-2008 05:45 PM

I'm interested to the Offshore racing, that real, from 35 years and my avatar it also testifies my preference on the old boats appreciating those of today and looking with interest at the innovations.
The yard CUV had the only center in Viareggio, my town and I have worked for some years for the two major team that competed with hulls CUV.
As for all the positive or negative events the causes are always various; in the case of the decline of CUV in the competitions they are in the fact that CUV mainly built hulls of success monohulls of 38' on design of Shead.
When it was clear that the cats were the only way to win competitions that almost totally they were developed by now in flat waters and in circuit ,CUV it tried to follow different ways to oppose them with the extension of the old mono 38' to 40' and 41' with different solutions of motorizations but the results they were void.
Different cats were built also in aluminum on project of Peters but the dominance of the hulls and the engines of Buzzi before and then of the cats in composite of Tencara and Victory were deadly for the small yard that at the same time he had lost almost all his 38's aces as Della Valle, Petri and the Speltas that were withdrawn by the competitions without having a generational exchange.
The following economic crisis due to the lack of successes and accordingly of errands of new hulls addition to one not perfect business management decreed the closing of the yard.
The CUV, Cantieri Uniti Viareggio (United Shipyards Viareggio) founded and direct always from the two brothers Bergamini and the partner Carlo Bazzichi it was always a small artisan firm that he exclusively worked on commission without to have ever had an own line of planning and production that allowed the yard to face the future with proper ideas both in the world of the competitions that in that of the powerboating generally.
It must be said that however CUV has been a milestone in the history of the Offshore when this sport was true Offshore. Theirs by now mythical 38' in aluminum they have dominated the competitions in Europe for over one decade and gotten three world titles in 1978 in Argentina with Francesco Cosentino in 1982 in England with Renato Della Valle and in Viareggio in 1984 with Franco Statua and Alberto Petri and in everybody and three occasions the success has arrived after a fierce struggle on very rough waters that testify the value of the hull designed by Don Shead and the same value of construction realized by CUV.A fourth World title however come in 1991 with a cat drove by Angelo Spelta at the worlds finals at Trieste.
It was the last hurrah of CUV.

ufix1 06-05-2008 07:03 AM

A very sad story indeed why did they not try to build their 38's in cmposite I mean ithink there are alot today that still like cyv. Me If I had to buy a piece of history Iwould not buy a cigarette or fountain I would buy a CUV. They are priceless meaning no price can be too much. I don't know. Maye
someone or the same family will restart the same buisness. But normally Models are changed vastly and it wwill lead back to square 1

Black Tornado 06-05-2008 04:22 PM

Speaking of offshore I believe not to exaggerate to say that Cigarette has a great part in the history...it is as the Ferrari in the F1.
Fountain instead can boast of only successes in the modern era that doesn't have anything anymore of offshore.
I don't believe that CUV is able to rise again but never say never.
CUV was exclusively specialized in the workmanship of the alloy and he has been this his strength, when for one decade the fiberglass or Kevlar were eclipsed by the boats in aluminum of Cougar and CUV.
In Italy, in Viareggio, they are still there some of these boats of CUV. The first 38' built in 1977, the Alitalia Uno World Champion in 1978 has recently been restored and unfortunately also modified in the deck, but it is ready for a new fast life on the waters.
In England to the next Round Britain there will be one of the 38' of Della Valle with the colors of Cinzano.
For the one that has the possibilities the dream to have a CUV it can become still reality, because the tin boats are forever...like the diamonds.

Black Tornado, We were in Italy 2 years ago and stopped in ViaReggio amongst other towns. We were based in Lucca. If I had known about this place I would have loved to have seen it. We are coming back in September for 10 days but we are staying close to Rome. Hey wait....Road Trip!

Black Tornado 06-06-2008 02:19 PM

R Addiction Rome it's about 360 km south of Viareggio.
I think that in 10 days you will have some things to see in and around Rome....:sport009:

R Addiction 06-06-2008 03:02 PM

Not a big tourist I'd rather see the "off the beaten track" places.

ufix1 06-07-2008 02:02 AM

Black Tornado 06-08-2008 02:46 PM

About one years ago the owner of Team Binautica,Biancalana,he wanted only to rent them.
I don't know if today he has changed mind.

ufix1 06-09-2008 07:28 AM

maybe when I am 18 i canbuy one and restore it to its original condition I like doing that thing. Is there any group exept classic offshore about these powerboats(classic) like us.

Black Tornado 06-10-2008 07:21 AM

ufix1 as you have known the existence of the CUVs?
Do you live in the States?
However compliments to you.
It is so rare to find a young interested to the past of his world.

ufix1 06-10-2008 08:03 AM

No if you live in Italy I live very near you in an island south of sicilly. I like modern powerboating but when I got just a taste of the past world of powerboating on the internet it attracted me a lot. Before racers raced with spirit today 90% of those raACERS have lost the spirit. Today If you have an infinite suppply of money you win. Before it wasn't like this. Today with money you do what you want. Before they used to do their own modifications and changes today they don't do that beacuase not all the spirit has been lost few teams make that. Before it wasn't a super rich man's sport. With the respect to the rich powerboat racers.
If we can't get this spirit back our sport will be like a fresh rotten apple. I hope interest will arise .

What did you mean by "ufix1 as you have known the existence of the CUVs? "

Do you agree with me or is there parts which can be corrected in my speech if so please do so as I would like to learn the real history.
