Dude! Sweet! 02-01-2008 11:24 AM

Dang, I was thinking Long Beach, Two harbors, Avalon, Newport, Long Beach! :D

I agree the safety thing is an issue, but how is it different than going out and running as hard as you can with a couple of buddies on a saturday?

Hey Sean, minus the Newport part and you have the RumRun....maybe you missed it last July....:hitfan:
We did pretty well in it....:evilb:
It might not be too long (approx 80 miles) but at least it doesn't go in a circle....It's as close to old school racing there is.....for now anyways.....I think there is room for your Pantera in the first wave.....

Dude! Sweet! 02-01-2008 01:28 PM

Rum Run? What's that? :D

Hoping to do the ski race and rum run this year. You guys seemed to run OK... Damn shame you don't have the form filling out part down! You might have won it! :D

You know I'm just messing around with you. You guys ran great and should be very proud of yourselves. The snafu on the classification sucks, but there's always next year! As usual, I'll be watching HFT's transom dissapear into the distance on our way to Catalina!

Huh, I thought you were talking about keeping people alive, not keeping people from getting sued.

beside that, people that get in the boat are not the problem , they know what are the risk, but the people behind them become a real problem in the event of an accident.

i was a rescue diver for 16 years (HELODIVER) is i don't perform perfect people can sue me, now you tell me where is the logic there?

Dude! Sweet! 02-01-2008 02:35 PM

Orss, I understand where you're coming from on that... I think stuff like that (suing competent medical professionals who perform capably) is a load of crap. I don't think there is a ton of logic (other than keeping people who don't know what they're doing from doing the job), but was focused on the "safety" part not the "liability" part of T2X comments. Having someone there to pry your wet, passed out ass out of your upside down canopy boat seems at the outset, the critical thing, whether you're racing, "non-racing" or just out tearing it up with your buddies.

BajaFresh 02-01-2008 04:06 PM

I've been thinking about this for some time now. When we do our little Catalina or Santa Barbara runs its all informal. Just a bunch of guys getting together to run our boats. But of course everyone runs hard and a few are running as fast as they can. I guess we do that in poker runs too. I remember running with a certain 28 Pantara in the SCOPE run and I don't know about the Pantara but we were running as fast as we could! So is that racing? I guess if we were in cars on the street it would be. So I guess if we call everyone and say we're meeting at Channel Islands Harbor for a "race" to SB then we could potentially be held liable if someone as trouble. But if we just say we're running to SB then what is our exposure (like Charlie's RI deal)?

Heres an old school idea: Instead of Fountain and Outerlimits going for kilo or top speed records, they set up an "endurance run", say Miami to Bimini? Any boat they want to bring with any power, any drivers. No BS, you brake, you lose. Run what ya brung! :cool-smiley-011:

when you are with the guys is one deal , when you organize and advertise is another whole ball game.

Dude! Sweet! 02-01-2008 04:15 PM

I don't think the guys in the Pantera were racing... Because you guys were faster than us... er, I mean faster than those guys in that Pantera! :D

Ha! You know I put a new motor in the boat a week later right?! And, I've actually already had that one out! Damn, yup I definately wasn't racing! :D

BajaFresh 02-01-2008 05:40 PM

Hey Sean,

I saw that you had the old motor for sale. What happened to the new one?

Talking to a roofing company out of Nor Cal that want to hire me (commercial roof sales). They are opening a So Cal office out of Mission Viejo and asked if I wanted to run that office. They are flying into Vegas next week to talk to me so I might be back over there soon (Only if I can find anything resembling reasonable housing prices in the OC)!

Dude! Sweet! 02-01-2008 06:11 PM

Hey that's awesome news! Well, now's the right time to look with the market in the crapper. Hope you were renting in Vegas!

Can't wait to have someone else to "non-race" with! :D

Finally sold the old motor about a month ago. The new motor had some substance abuse problems and went into rehab! :D

Oh, and I was obviously kidding in my last post... We ran that little Pantera like we were running for the world championship! That day is on a short list of best days I've ever had. I know that boat wouldn't run any faster than we ran it that day.

HabanaJoe 02-01-2008 07:13 PM

If I can expand and get a West Coast operation going I could come out and "not race" both of you!

There are times when I have run out there and it has been just perfect. Nice rollers, warm sunny day, boat running great, flying the boat in perfect rhythm with the waves. Having so much fun that I have literally laughed out loud. Those days stick with me like a scene from a movie that I watch over and over again in my head. Just one day on the water like that makes the cost and hassle of boat ownership truely priceless!

See, this is what I'm saying here. Bunch of guys, running the boats, no rules or regulations because we all know what to do and have the experience to not do anything dumb. Just running hard and working the sticks. Come on out any time, Joe!

Just a pictorial reminder of what I'm talking about. This is off the coast of SB. It was like 80 degrees that day and the water was perfect!

HabanaJoe 02-01-2008 07:54 PM

Baja, your perfect day makes me cry!!!!

My one perfect day was back in 1985, my wife and I had a 24 Monza then with our old AMT 7.3L diesel in it. We ran out through Stiltsville and up to Lauderdale that afternoon about 50-55 mph, not a breathe of air, flat water, drinking beverages from dark green bottles and the engine just hummed along. I felt that was what boating was all about - I live that day over and over, don't know why, but it did make everything to get to that point worth while.

Dude! Sweet! 02-01-2008 08:07 PM

After the Poker Run last year, I had a big blister in the palm of my throttle hand and another across my lower back. I'd get in the shower every day for the week after and the one on my back would burn like hell! And everytime, I'd smile a big satisfied smile and hear the motor in my head all over again!

BajaFresh 02-01-2008 08:48 PM

This past summer some friends rented a house on the (Colorado) River just north of Havasu. Well daytime temps get up to 120 or so and we party pretty hard, hammer down to the Sandbar, Channel etc. Lots of traffic, running the boat fast, dodging idiots, etc. By the end of the day I'm done driving my boat so I'm riding in my buddy's Ultra lake boat. Bunch of good friends in the boat we run down river and grab something to eat and I can drink now. We hang out until the sun starts to go down and head up river. Most of the boats are off the water now and it has flattened out. As the sun drops over the horizon the sky kind of glows just enough for us to see where we're going. Riding in the back with my feet proped up, not a care in the world, low freeboard so I can drag my hand and skip the surface of the water as we fly up the river at about 70, warm air blowin in my face, nicely buzzed, good friends on board and this song comes on:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pwbowi-8Yoo

One of my all time favorites songs (and band). It was one of those absolute perfect moments and if the world ended right then I would have died a happy man!

I have a lots of those days in my memory banks and most of them are when boating.

If you left coast guys want to see some old school running from that neck of the woods, click on

www.bananaboatco.com

and go to the section called media archives. Between the Autoweek and Esquire magazine articles is an old Super 8 Home movie of the California Bushmills race from 1979 .

It is about 25 minutes long, but the start is at the 7 minute mark and that was a run down to Dana Point from Newport Beach. Around the 20 minute mark is the oil island turn point before heading to Catalina.

Enjoy.

BajaFresh 02-01-2008 09:44 PM

Wow, great video, Charlie! Man, you really were the Top Banana that day! Doesn't look like anybody and anything for you. Thanks for the link.

nocigarette 02-03-2008 09:03 AM

WOW that is crazy water.............Great video charlie...

matador 02-03-2008 01:29 PM

question, why dont you guys do a bad ass poker run with vintage speed boats easy to do and everyboby will have an awsome time....remember time its the only comodity you cant buy so live the present and have fun what happen in the 70s and 80s is part of history not the present think as a 25 year high school reunion.

oldschoolfan 02-03-2008 01:42 PM

I think the idea of this post is to try to return the "offshore" to offshore racing. Top Banana has been preaching this for awhile. Now he has a race planned with Horba and OSS at Sunny Isles in June I think. Don't get me wrong I love watching the Super Cats at the races but what makes the small circle track racing any difrent that the Hydro racing on the lakes? Point to Point takes alot more if you ask me.

matador 02-03-2008 02:07 PM

I like to be realistic a poker run will be by far a more realistic event from whatever point to point you want to do it,however if it indeed goes down will be a great race....

Appreciate those from the past and present that keep this sport alive.
The stores told from the 'masters of yesterday' are priceless.
Thanks so much for the memories.

TB, nice site.

Should I admit that I've had that downloaded onto my computer for over a year and probably watch it once a week! :D

Allman Bros! I was just listening on the way in to work this morning.

Here's a clip from the Scope poker run. I wish they'd shot it with both of us in the video at the same time (BajaFresh and I were side by side on this run).

And yes, my Pantera is named "Corndog"! :D

Old thread, but for those who still have offshore racing on their bucket list, there will be the Don Aronow Memorial Around Long Island race on August 22 nd. Come for the party on Friday the 21 st and meet some of the old racers.

This year we also have a Rally. A team of four boats can divide the distance and each boat can run 1/4 of the distance. Not a race, but you still get to compete over the same waters that have produced such great races of the past. Come and join us.

mark rice 07-17-2015 04:45 AM

hi guys i own a 1969 all wood off shore class 2 boat in the uk we used to have a 200 mile race it was the cows torquay cows but health and safety and bloody yachts slowly made it imposible to run as an international race it now runs more as a classic event its about the only long race left in the uk i think its such a shame that all the red tape gets in the cway of this sort of thing reg mark
