Hardware on older boats

Charlie
In reviewing the rules and reg info it indicates the boats with recessed cleats can only run in the Memorial race. That presents a huge problem because older boats had raised cleats.Charlie when you restore Benihana will it have the original cleats and hardware
This needs to be review. BudWeisner

Bud... read the rules again......if the old cleats are there and can be wrapped with foam and tape, they pass.

just because you have no problem with the $1,000 entry fee, doesn't mean others agree with it apparently, that's a TON of bait for an afternoon jaunt...

To be very clear regarding the entry fee as we have really struggled with the $$ amount. Almost every dime is going to pay for insurance and dive rescue teams in helicopters and on boats.

If this were an event right on the beach our flight hours would drop dramatically and the cost would drop relative to the cost of the minimum acceptable level of safety for the participants.

If any nickel’s left over evertyhing goes to charity. All of the time effort and hard costs to date have been volunteered.

THANKS! for all the work you and everyone else has done to pull this off.

I would love to be able to be there. But have a lot on the go and the costs of getting there and back, Hotels, Gas. Fee's
Ex. Ex. seem to be alot for a small Buzz man like myself

I wish all you guys the best

Len

Mid West Mag Owners

Who from the Midwest will be going to the Don Aronow gathering and race 6/20 in Sunny Isles...I know there are costs involved,$1,200 for gas,$1,000 if you are going to race plus food and lodging. You are probably looking at $2-3,000 but look what you get ...be part of the potential largest gathering of old school Magnums, seeing there are a lot of them in Florida that will be there plus hopefully ones from the Midwest. Also a chance to meet all of your Magnum buddies plus drivers and crews who ran these great boats.

Can we see a show of hands of Magnum diehards who are going ???????

Old Timers party

I've spoken with Carl and Jeanne Moesly, Dave Craig and Jon Culver..They are all coming barring a crisis or medical problems..Jon wasn't an ocean racer, but he has very long racing roots with Mercury, even before OPC started.

Jon Culver was a legend in his own back in the day. He ruled the JJ class of OPC for a few years there. I was just a poor J class racer and always watched those JJ guys blow out of sight in the mid 60's era.

For those new racers of this era.....here is a shot of Mel Riggs changing the prop on a Ron Jones tunnel cat in '70 and Odell Lewis with the first turbine powered offshore boat in the mid 60's. Would you like to be the first to tell them about all the "New" ideas in offshore today.

Little Tommy 05-14-2008 10:48 PM

I sure hope Mel will be down for this. We have the pleasure of seeing the Riggs family on a regular basis and they are the nicest, most down to earth people you will ever want to know.
Just having a shot of the weeds, sitting back, drinking a few beers listening to Mel talk about the good old days is the best!!! My wife Kathy, also enjoys going up there on the weekends while the boys work on the motors. They grill out and Kathy spends her time talking with Shirley and Mindy and sometime Mel (if he is done beating up on me!!!). This family has huge hearts and we are so lucky to have be-friended them all!!
LT and Kathy

Jon is too damn modest, he was Chief referee of Offshore under Gene Whipp....and probably the best at that job we ever had.......... His wife Carol also handled scoring and registration and volunteered for nearly everything....... We also used his props back in the day in the old Around Long Island Marathon...so that has to count for something...:D

Remember his brother Roy also, I`m not sure if he is even alive, John Steinbach, Marty Businger, Johnnie Backus, heard he was working out of Fond du lac airport on his plane. I`ll try and get Stuteville to come, let`s not forget Bobby Moore. and Mike Ramsey, the list goes on,

Question on race numbers. When will they be assigned? How many digits and of what size? The rule book says "all racing numbers and identification will be assigned and distributed by HORBA." Does that mean the actual vinyl numbers will be supplied by HORBA as well?
