Bit of trivia..don't know if this is the appropriate thread so mods please feel free to move.
Aronow had 2 ( at least!) "The Cigarette"s, powered by twin Mercruisers. One of them was bought by Australians Val and Paul Carr in about 1970 or 1971, and came to race here. I think the other went on to be a "Black Tornado". Tragically, both Val and Paul were killed in about 1972, when the boat spun in a race off Sydney and threw them out. Subsequently, the boat was bought by Arnold Glass who ran it for a year or so before buying the candy striped "American Eagle" ( the 36 Cigarette). The Cigarette was then sold to Norm Jenkin and disappeared. I hope it is sitting in a shed somewhere but I fear it may be long gone.. |
I had heard American Eagle had been burned and destroyed in a fire.
Also, I heard the other day that Arnold Glass now lives in Monte Carlo racing aeroplanes. He is now about 80 y.o. and still going well |
Re Old Pics
These pics have been copied from the Boatmad Gallery (Grahams Library) in which there are hundreds more. This an English website which along with a lot of old offshore films is trying to astablish a good record of offshore. The hope is that it inspires U.S. offshore fans to unearth all those hidden away U.S. pics and put them on this site. All these pics and films have come from my own offshore library in which I began snapping in the early 60`s.For ref the gallery is in www.boatmad.com

I quote you Doc flying!:ernaehrung004:
Came on from US pics!!!!! |
What the americans need is a platform for putting their shots online collectively. HORBA have done a tremendous job in doing that so far, but what about all those amateur shots out there? The Boatmad site is fantastic for having the 'library' section, where all and sundry can go and browse through 100's of pics in one location. It just takes a huge amount of time to put it all together.
I thought I had a lot of photo's until I saw Graham's library! |

The boat you are talking about ( I think ) is the boat that Tom and I raced in Australia, we went down to qualify for the worlds, We raced the Mercury Trophy race in Port Saint Philip bay in Melbourne. One of the coldest roughest races I have ever run, seas in the bay were 8 to 12 ft. wind blowing 40 mph, took us almost 4 hours to go 80 miles, that`s the race where the 44` Longshot???????? Peter Deans old boat, stuffed and broke in half. We sold that boat to a boat Mfg. named John Haines, he built Haines Hunter powerboats. The boat we sold had bottom damage from the race, and was in pretty bad shape, and Tom gave Okay to copy and build boats from. This particular boat was not a Cigarette, it was Toms own design built by ( I think) Rudy Ramos of Rayson Craft boats. Tom built a very big flat pad on the keel, which did`nt work, until we attached an alum. V to make it more like a Cigarette Bottom. The famous 35` Cig American Eagle that I built and won the UIM worlds in 1976 is supposedly in Panama as a Panama Hawk. I did hear that Haines Hunter boat co. did have a fire, and is possible those molds were lost.
Priceb, the Stefan Riviera boat was built in about 1987 or so to replace the by now ageing ex American Eagle. Riviera also built a 36 for Bill Barry Cotter to run ( Bill's first offshore race boat) in about 1989. |

What a tragedy. Another priceless piece of history gone. Mind you, the boat was regarded as "jinxed" after it threw out the Carrs. Arnold Glass picked it up for a song in 1973 at the auction...

Actually......HORBA has been tracking it and we have some reliable information that the boat was seen within the last year. The hunt continues.
