1986 Open Class National Champ Apache

Quick question the rules back in 1986 were that the points went to the boat not the driver. The last race of the season Apache used Sal's 36 ft Seahawk boat to win the championship. Apache stuffed their cat the race prior and was damaged.
Was their an exception to rules because of this?

The way I remember it was someone was registered as driver of record. The points followed him. There was a provision to allow a boat change. I could pull out the old book and see but some one else will know the fine details.

They might have had more then one boat, but the rules stated that the points go to the boat not the driver. So was an exception made because of the crash?

The Hull was in fact a wooden Maelstrom Cat purchased by Apache. Maelstrom cats were all designed by Mike Peters and the wooden hulls were built by John McCall. Technically the hull was a Maelstrom and later a plug was made (also by John McCall I believe) for the later fiberglass true Apache cats that you see up to this day.
