My dad owned a 26 Monza that he bought instead of the 24 Cigarette back in 72 that had the twin 6's in it.If it did 48 i think that would be pushing it.

Thanks for the reply. Here are several pictures of the boat. Just pulled out the inline 6's and the Alpha drives off. Looking to repower and have not made up my mind which way to go.

Ghostrider 12-08-2008 05:02 PM

that is gorgeous!

tommymonza 12-08-2008 05:07 PM

That thing looks hot.Kind of looks like the windshield is back further than stock.

Could you resize your photos to like 1300 pixels and relaod so i can see them better

tommymonza 12-08-2008 05:11 PM

Why not go with twin smallblocks if the drives are mounted apart far enough. We later had stock 260s in the 26 and it ran about 63mph.Some hot 350s would get you 70-75.

lucky strike 12-08-2008 06:12 PM

Cool boat....Teak was the thing back then.

The boat is set up for inline blocks will have to reglass to replace with
V-blocks. Thinking of going with mercs new 135hp inline, like to keep it old School and cost. This is the reason why I was looking for top speed as new.

nocigarette 12-08-2008 06:20 PM

That thing is fuccing cool....Leave it as old school as you can......

tommymonza 12-08-2008 06:22 PM

Can you give us a little background on the boat ? I like the clean look without all the rails and vents but the teak remains.Nice color too Kinda of like a modern looking oldschool.

If you could find a pair of old 470s to rebuild that might be an option. They are a all aliminuim inline 4 if i remember right that put out a 170 horse.

Looks Good I will be interested to follow your project .Where you located Sunset and welcome to OSO

Thank you for all the positive feedback. I purchased the boat last December from a older gentleman who was the original owner, it was his wives boat called RUTHY BABY. It was white with a red boot strip. Every thing on the boat was from 1972 amazing shape for a salt water boat. I did all the work myself outside of shooting the paint to dirty in my friends barn. The boat is now in Atlantic City, NJ.

I was thinking the same thing with the 470's I believe they were more like 190 horse with the 4 barrel option:eek:

I had one in a 19' searay and it ran great, I believe there is a place in CT that specializes in them. Tey would be lightweight, and pust that thing better than inline 6's

go to www.cliffordperformance.net they have some killer inline six parts pistons cams intakes and there saying is (were 6cyl = 8cyl )also 951-471-1161 I have used them time and time again with good results

searaycer 12-10-2008 11:46 AM

yeah my uncles jeep is all done up with Clifford parts, it runs pretty good for a six

johnny g 12-10-2008 01:05 PM

That is absolutely the coolest boat! I looked at it a couple years ago, I bet you will enjoy it for a long time. Good luck! :ernaehrung004: If you ever want to get rid of it I`ll trade you a Sonic.

tommymonza 12-10-2008 06:44 PM

Just finished having a beer with my buddy and got b.s.ing about 6s being that i had a 300 -6 in a old Bronco and he had a Jeep with a 6 .He was telling me about the Clifford head and 4 barrel intake he put on it and said they were not kidding about 6 was now 8.

I remember thoses old 6s of my dads winding at full throttle ,they sound like Singer sewing machines running on 220.You would have to skip the thru hull because they would sound like an old milk truck but the enginge room sound at throttle is nice.

TexomaPowerboater 12-10-2008 07:25 PM

Beautiful boat. Awesome resto. Keep us updated on the repower.

Fr. Frank 12-10-2008 07:57 PM

In addition to the 250c.i. 165 hp, sterndrive, Mercruiser also made a 150 hp version, and a 180 hp version of that block.

But the cream was made from 1972 through 1974. Mercruiser made a 250 hp I-6 sterndrive called the "250/250", for 250 cubic inches and 250 horspower. It was a 250 c.i. 6 cylinder Chevy block, with a high-lift, long duration camshaft, polished intake, through-hull exhaust, and a 625 cfm Quadrajet carburetor.

I can't speak for the Cigarette and which setup it had installed, but I have seen these 250/250 motors mounted in three different boats: a 1973 24' Martini, a 1974 25' Wellcraft Nova, and a 1974 23' Formula Thunderbird, and I know of at least one '74 Slickcraft SS-245 Sport, although it had been repowered with Gil-brackets and 3.4L Mercury OBs by the time I saw it.

The only one I ever saw run was the Martini, whose owner claimed a top speed of 54 mph.

speed with the in line 6's?--about 1mph for every hundred of rpm.they red line at i think 4600.i had one for 20 years a '72 model it is now in st louis still going strong.i had it in the bahamas many, many times it is a really unique boat the teak looks killer when varnished(i did this to mine)i thought about small blocks many times;... cigarette factory told me not to do it as don designed it to handle the in line 6's.what you can do though is hop up the 6's.may old stock car racers will tell you you can make them run with v8's.my problem was with the old original drives ;they had the mercury switch that killed the engines when shifting....this is the problem see,all the power you get from a 6 (when you hop them up,is in the valve work via cam, carb,,ect.and it will idle rough so the old fashioned drives would not work. for this; you would run into every dock trying to get you engine started when trying to reverse.with bravo's though you could probably get it to work i eventually went to alpha's;then sold the boat.the alphas would have been okay as well i imagine if i had hopped it up any.tip: i repowered with 292's (the old bread truck motors)they are a little bump in hp,and you can run 4bbl carbs on them ,and slightly taller .you were able to get target motors from chevrolet, maybe not any more but in the late 80's they were still available.mercury had a option for these motors as well and they came from the factory with a 4bbl carb if i remember right.these work too you just have to cut the motormount springs in half.another thing i did was have a company called marine manifold in long island make me up a pair of copper water jacketed maniflods for thru hull.with both engines running they sound like a v8.they worked great and are still on the boat i had them made in 1980,and they are still working fine.i just sent them an original manifold and they copied it. i would highly reccomend the company.i had them custom make a pair of old chrysler hemi manifolds as well for my 50's hemi's i had in a boat i lived on.if anyone is interested i can call the new owner of it and the city on long island is still on the name plate of the manifolds.definately go with thru hulls,it makes it alot more fun!!!i am about finished restoring a 28ss.i go get it in miami next weekend from the upholstery shop.do not feel embarrased with the 6's YOU CAN make them run and they are tough and a good torque motor.when i pulled a skiier i had to only use 1 motor and then slightly add throttle, otherwise it would pull the skiiers arm socket out of place.it will pull 2 skiiers up instantly with 1 engine--keep the six;s change your drives to modern drives and use the 6's they are SO EASY TO WORK ON. my 28ss with new 383 strokers in it are going to be a nightmare to repair anything.out with the engines to do about anything.i can see that already.good luck!!

one other thing the old original pictures of it when it belonged to the lady from new had the original seats in it.the ones now are definately not original.the originals seats had an aluminum rod sticking out each seat bottom to screw in/out to allow you to ajust the seat forwards or backwards as far as you wanted.then screw it clockwise back in to lock the seat base

actually it was rated at 185,,, massive head cracking and head gasket problems though.. alum block and steel 460 head??

the basic 4bbl 292 was about 200-205 hp and GREAT torq, it would run right with ANY 302 Ford in the day, back in the late 70's a friend and I built a pair of 292's with Clifford intakes, Isky cams, and 390 Holley's, we balanced them carefully (mega importance here) about 240-250hp... and you could run them at 5000 rpm all day long and they didn't care...

Thanks for all the information. I have made up my mind not to reglass for a single setup, going forward with all new inline motors and Alpha drives. Looking to keep this boat more sporty than speedy, no one loves big speed more than me but I have had a long run with some amazing offshore rides this one going to be my gentleman's ride..

Hi Tommymonza, nice old school pics of the Monza. I have a 26 footer but she is outfitted with the center console cap. Actually, it is an 89 hull that belonged to Eloy the guy who owned Monza. Back then he had the offshore cap on it. He re did the entire boat with a center console cap. Funny how the lines haven't changed much.

Love the boat, just wish there were more out there.
