Are these the same Gentry Eagle boats?

I think the red one is 46 ft and the white is 50ft, are they the same boat modified?

Black Tornado 02-24-2009 02:29 PM

I think that they are the same boat and I also believe that the dimensions have remained the same.
Unbelievable as you have found two practically identical photos to 8 years of distance and that they allow us to appraise well the similes between them.

Yes they are they same hull.

What about these two...

I know they are the same boat, but what boat was it before Tom got it? Looks to be about a 38ft cougar...don't think its wood but could be...

38ft GENTRY CAT

Go to http://boatmad.com/forum/showthreadphp?t=12592

It was ex-Peter Stuyvesant,ex-Limit Up.

Check out thread re Limit Up in Historic Section.

Black Tornado 02-24-2009 04:40 PM

I think that it was simply a new boat and Gentry it was the first one to drive it in a competition.
The same year to the Viareggio worlds Gentry brought another new cat in aluminum of Cougar of 40' (I believe) always with the central cockpit and the places (two) beside.

Gentry Boat 1991

A little snippet from the past complete with wing.

That boat has been talked about in past threads with umpteen length references and various construction materials, but now finally it`s looks like settling down to be alloy 48ft stretched to 50ft.Ex-Budweiser.

The 38ft red/white Gentry is wood construction and this has been confirmed in past threads from them that should know, that it is an ex-toleman boat, and that when it sunk in 1990,it was referred to as a 10yr old boat i.e.Limit Up (1980) as raced by Mike Doxford.

50' with the wing.
For the war of the lengths Crouse on Searace in 1984 speaks of 46.'
In an aerial photo of the 1984 Key West docks the cat of Gentry is beside the Popeyes of Copeland and they seems twin in length.

It was a 46 but with the addition of the bussel to facilitate the wing it became 50

How long?

I`ve seen it recorded as 46ft,so both Richie Powers and Brownie are both incorrect in saying it was 48ft in previous posts, which I find hard to believe, and the diatribe I recently posted refers to it being stretched in various stages from 48ft to 50ft,so that`s wrong as well.Nah! like most things the truth is with the guy who did the work in extending it.Step up please and put us out of our misery.

flying fish 02-26-2009 02:33 AM

46 Or 48ft

The guy who could give a definitive answer on this, and I know he reads these posts,is Pete Currington. So come on Peter, get out of that directors chair, and walk over to the drawing cabinet at Cougar and reveal all, unless of course youv`e had a bonfire on the Warsash foreshore of all these records.

The one who absolutly knows is Sammie James who was the T-Man on that boat and was in charge of that race team and boat. The story goes that he cut the pickle fork ends off and blunted the nose to fit into his garage over by Lake Okeechobee. It was basically the joke of the industry at the time. He rigged the boat there maintained it there etc. I would find it hard to believe that TG or Sammie would order a 46` when evryone else was building 50` that`s why we say it was at least a 48` or 50` then after Sammie performed the surgery it became a 46`, so same story in reverse.

I went there to Sammie's shop in La Belle Fla to paint it. same shop where he made stepped bottom air boats to drag race.

Blunt Pickleforks

With reference to post 13,was the forward 2ft that was cut off put back as a portable bow section, because somehow I`m convincing myself that in the pic in post 1,the gunwale line at the bow looks quite straight and not as a fair line,so it raced as a 48ft but was kept in the shed as a 46ft.
