Default 1968 Carrie bought in Miami, need info on brand..

My Dad gave me a boat that he bought from Don Arrnow in 1968 in Miami, hull #3. It has been out of the water since 1976 or so and he says it is a Carrie? It is 20 foot long, mid night blue and white center console. I cannot find any information on the brand? Please respond w/any info..

Default Cary

Don Aronow had his friend Eldon Cary build the first "Cigarettes" for him. You have to go by the HIN or Hull Identification # on back transom. This is like the VIN of the boat. Cigarette has has a CRT prefix, CARY had CNF. The number is either stamped, attached , etc to the hull. It should be on the boat. If not use the registration # to get the hull ID # from the state. I am suprised it is a 20 foot hull so it is not a Cigarette. Try looking up information on Cary on the web.

I believe Elton Cary built a 20' or 21' center console back the in the late '60s early '70s - I looked at one that was for sale here a number of years back. I don't think they had anything to do with Don Aronow, other than the connection that he and Elton had regarding the 32' Cigarette raceboat, which was also the 32' Cary pleasure boat. Elton was Aronow's straw man when he built the original 32' raceboat, as Don was locked into a non-compete with Magnum.

Thank you for the replies..My Dad says when he bought it. It had the cigarette racing emblem on it and that it was Elton Cary's son bought. He ran it for six yrs. then was notified he had the same Fl. #'s as someone else. Never did anything about it. Then had a divorce and it hasn't been in the water since..

After Aronow Sold Magnum He Had A 3 Yr Covenant Not To Compete.so He Convinced His Friend Miami Business Man And Banker Elton Cary To Start Cary Boats And Don Ran It From 67 To 70. He Then Started Cigarette And Elton Sold The Company To Victor Posner Who Moved It To Michigan And Built Cary 50s. Iused To Own A Cary 28. I Was Only Aware Of Cary Making 28s , 32s, And 50s.why Dont You Look Elton Up He Lives In Miami And Is A Fountain Of Information. I Had Lunch With Him At Joes Stone Crab [where He Hangs Out About 5 Years Ago. He Is A Very Interesting Guy.

mistress gives good advice!
also keep in mind if the boat is early it will most likely not have a HIN #...

sounds like an interesting piece!

Jim here is a 43' x 12' beam Cary my brother had shipped up here on Lake St Clair that he is rebuilding. I beleive they only built the 43' with 3 big block 482's and Arneson surface drives from 1985 to 1986. This Cary wont be ready for the Old School Reunion II this year, but should hit the water by Aug 09. See you at the Reunion. Mark
