SuperNova 24 is back!

May not have motors in it yet but after decals yesterday it sure looks a lot closer to being done and it's officially the race boat again.

Lookin good F'n, Im looking foreward to seeing that project complete. are you going to stay period correct with the motors?

GB 07-05-2010 04:22 PM

Damn....Nice job!

Sadly no unless you have a set of left and right rotating 427 ford side oilers that you are willing to donate. :drink:

BROWNIE 07-06-2010 08:52 AM

Unless you have changed the V drive, tey are both lefts.

SpeedDoc 07-06-2010 09:42 AM

Wouldn't it be easier to use two Rights and use a different prop? Does the Vdrive care which way it spins?

f_inscreenname 07-06-2010 10:02 AM

Brownie you have me scratching my head here.
One motor in front, one in back, tail to tail going to a single V drive in the center. If they both spun left, when tail to tail, they would end up spinning opposite of each other would they not? I thought you needed a clockwise motor and CCW motor so when they are tail to tail they would spin in the same direction. That’s what Ferd and I came up with.

PS Thanks folks for the comments.

f_inscreenname 07-06-2010 10:11 AM

Wait a minute. Ferd did tell me you had a “crash box” on one motor or something like that. Maybe that had something to do with the rotation thing. At the moment it’s getting a set of counter rotating MerCruiser (not much left of the MerCruisers besides the name plate) 454’s with 1 to 1, Velvet drives on each. That may explain things…I think.

SpeedDoc 07-07-2010 07:59 AM

Mark, Can you spin the input shafts on the Vdrive by hand? Do they both spin the same way? I would think you would want both motors to spin opposite of each other to cancel out rotational torque. You Can make it better than it was since technology today is better than the late 60's. The General "Tandem" Concept will be the same but the Hardware to do it will be better.

f_inscreenname 07-07-2010 10:37 AM

There is a single input shaft that comes out through both sides of the top single gear of the V drive that hooks to the drive shafts of both motors, front and back. That’s why you need counter rotating motors so when put tail to tail the out pot will spin in the same direction. Being there are only 2 gears in the V drive the top gear spins the bottom gear (prop shaft gear) in the opposite direction. So if the input is CW the output will be spinning CCW or vice versa. Anyway around it the prop will always spin the opposite direction of the motors, canceling out torque. I always thought it was designed that way. Not sure now.

I built the motors for that when I worked for HM..Then Brownie took me for a ride....YIKES..

A friend found a video online of the 1969 Bahama 500 and the boat is in it. A lot of editing and a little updating and this is what you did lilabner.:D

Little late on my part reading this thread but if you are not going to run trannies, why not drive one off the flywheel side and one of the timeng chain side.We ran of the front of motors in the drag boats and jersey skiffs.Just a Idea. JOHN SR

That vid... has got to putta chit eatin' grin on ya! :D

From ear to ear!

The motors are built and almost ready to drop in. Just some little things I should wrap up in the next week. Just waiting on the V drive to get it all together.

They don't look like 427 Fords to me..Good luck anyway..
