Phil when you started filming offshore racing?
Do you have tapes of those early years? First overseas event was the World Championships in Mar Del Plata, Argentina in 1979. Our success was do to a combination of talents - great Pilots - the Best narration ever and narrated live as the race happened - Only special Tapes were also over dubbed at times. I was just the manager - supplying a need- and had so many loyal clients that made it all possible - Most of the events from 1978 - 1979 have been lost or destroyed, only what was later converted to tape - - BIG SEAS - with Darren Luhrs and T2X - have the library - A special thanks to Walter Ragazzi - who helped me film for IOTA - in Europe - (in their PAL format too) - in 1992. All the best Marco ! Phil |

The Cary is in Florida and the disassembly will begin on Monday. Once the boat is completely apart, we can get into what it actually needs as far as replacement.....transom, stringers, bulkheads, etc etc. We then make up a priority list and draw up a budget and start the campaign for funds to get to work. Once again, a big thanks to Bobby Sheer for transporting this boat from California to Florida and to Catastrophe for providing the funding for the trip. |

Walt was one of the best - I met him when He was on a refresher course at Raco Helicopters - He would fly - "under a hood" to practice his instrument rating - a great guy - fun to be with - always a smile - a famous quote from him while flying - was - "Where to Boss" - haha ! as everyone aboard had their own ideas of where we should go -! Walt was cool under pressure - and just a nice guy to work with.
Phil I had head he was really good at flying, he could do some crazy things with a choper. I think he was a Med-Vac pilot in Viet Nam,, had to be good to get out a live there. yes I worked with him got many years in the 70s when we worked at Interdata. Never knew he flew or was involved in Racing until one day I asked him where was a for a few days and told me he was flying for you. I wonder where he is now? Thank you Jim |
Walt M.
He was excellent at flying - he went to New Zealand with us too in 1986 -
I have lost track with him - more than 15 years ago - but am still greatful for his skills and experience. For sure, our efforts were a team effort - and he was one of the key players ! I remember he used to ride his Motorcycle to work too - Thanks for bringing back Memmories Jim ! Phil |

No...This is Charlie's boat...the one that the thread is all about. It is now at Falcon Hi-Performance on LI. |
The picture confused me.
I thought the boat was going to FLA. And that picture is definitely NOT Florida. What's falcon doing to it? |
What's the latest update on this project? I assume that the boat needs to be stripped down once you get the funds and plans in place? Approximately how long will this project take?
|
The boat is now in New York. We spoke to a couple of shops in south Florida, but one thing or another didn't work out.
We were tossing around some ideas and the deciding factor was, that by bringing the boat to NY, Michael Aronow could become part of the project on a regular basis. Michael is an attorney in NY and he has some very fond memories of these 32 footers being built. On top of that, Jimmy's shop was the same one that handled Tommy's redo of the 27 footer with the Cigarette livery that was in attendance at the Around Long Island race. That boat was restored as an 11 out of a possible 10......really beautiful. This boat is meant to honor both a man, Don Aronow, and an era that really set the stage for offshroe racing for many years. We want it done correctly. Many many thanks to Bob Sheer who provide the transportation with his semi, all the way from California to Florida and then up to New York. A very big thank you also to Catastrophe, who provided the funds for the Califonia to Florida portion of the trip. We will be announcing very soon some fundraising ideas for the restoration. One of the ideas so far, is a lottery that the winner will get a ride in the boat next November in Key West , with me driving and Bobby Saccenti throttling the boat just like it was 1969 all over again......not for the faint of heart. LOL |
Charlie, Thanks for the update, it's appreciated! Would I be able to come check it out periodically once the project is underway? It would be amazing to see. I am very much an admirer of Aronow's accomplishments and what he did in his lifetime. To see you wanting to keep the spirit alive and re-create this boat to look like Aronow's original, is very very impressive and I am very excited to see the outcome.
I'd love a ride when it's all done, but I'm sure some other lucky fellow will get a ride instead. If you are interested in my love for the sport, im sure you'd love to hear my own tribute to Aronow. Remember my Mini Hawk? I kept it decided not to sell it. When I heard of this project, I decided to take on a big challenge. Working with a man from Guy LaMotta's marina in port Washington, I have fixed up everything on my Mini Hawk, and in the spring, it will be getting painted. It will replicate Aronow's 32' Cary "the cigarette"- the same thing you are doing with your project. Same paint scheme, and same graphics. It will sport 3 accon pop up cleats and a fancy rubrail. The only thing that wont be the same are the seats. Those are staying white. -Sam |
Nice boat! Good luck with her!!
