Thanks for everyones comments. I did not sell her although came close several times. I have had her in storage for a long time and this year looks like my year to start her restoration. I have spent years in the America's Cup world as a sailor and entrepreneur. I have restored many old cars and four America's Cup yachts so this should be a fun challenge. I spent the last two years restoring a 1953 120' LCU Landing Craft www.DeltaLandingCraft.com for fun. That taught me some rigging as I had to install three detroits and four gensets in cramped spaces. Anyway Im trying to block out some time and money to get going on her. I have a million questions some John Connor has answered but heres my main concerns Im going over. I would like her to look historically correct and be fast enough to at least enjoy a poker run at some level. I would love to stay away from four engines and would like to know what the pros suggest. One thought was to run two Detroit 8v92 twin turbo supercharged 1400HP engines like the guys in Australia. I run many work boats all using detroits so parts wise it would be ideal. But im not married to that idea. So what would get her going at a decent clip and be reliable. No rebuilds in 200 hours? She had Gentry's surface drives but it seems a bravo type outdrive might be best so I can remove rudders and excess weight. I also need to know who can replace canopy glass? The interior is mostly there so my local upholstrey genius can revive her. If anyone has time please email me direct with your ideas. I have a lot of projects going on but I think in two years she can hit the water again.

John, The Gentry is owed a restoration. These aluminum boats fought hard and kept their strength and should be handed the chance to shine again. If you look at the condition that the Rascal was left in and your pictures, they look like old beat dogs tied up to a tree to die. Like I did you will go through just about every power option out there. Many hours of starring at the bilge, check book, and drawings will answer your own questions. I came up with most of my decisions in my sleep. I wake up and I have the perfect plan and off to find the parts. Check out my forum Restoring a Legend (Rascal). As I walk by the Rascal every day I hit the hull with my hand and listen to the aluminum echo and smile. Good stuff. Ron May

The diesels would work fine a large boat like that can carry the weight I bet?

Just know you have to overdrive the props, the engines don't turn fast enough to make the props work well even in direct drive. Think gas boat prop speeds (engine rpm divided by reduction gear) and you need to match those prop speeds or else you'll have a slug - good luck that's a great boat and to be able to run it around and take long distance juants with those diesels would be ideal, wish I could do what your doing!

Anyone know of a Detroit marine specialist who can get me some wicked 8v92TTi's?

I think they can be mod to reach 1200-1400 HP.

Thanks for the pics and canopy help. Now I need a good used set of ASD 8s

Cat will be releasing some very high power density marine engines some time this year maybe. We're validating them right now.
