Gallo Wine became The Hustler, than Break Out. The Break Out is now at Emerald City Harbor waiting for it's restoration by the Mathes family...:drink: The Maverick became Medicine Man and I believe she sank in a East Coast race, today I hear she laying in a field out East.:eek:

Fast Shafts 02-21-2011 11:13 PM

About 10 years ago I found Medicine Man (Maverick) lying in a yard in Tuckerton NJ. When I went to look for it 2 years ago (at the request of an OSO member) it was gone.:(

Thanks for feedback and pics, any ideas on hull design? Not many start from scratch !!!!!!!!:

I remember this. Didn't it have a small tree growing in it? A TRS gimbal broke and she sank?

I will add that the 32' Miami Scorpion molds came from a company in NJ called Viper.. I always thought that they originated from Maverick but could never et a clear answer...

"Gallo Wine became The Hustler, than Break Out. The Break Out is now at Emerald City Harbor waiting for it's restoration by the Mathes family... "

Under what name will she be restoring as?

Has the boat been racing ever since or was she laid up for some time?

Zeller one 02-22-2011 08:31 AM

I remember seeing vipers being built in nj,and it was a common name hull mold or splash! I think mavericks sides had a creese like cig / apache .

As I remember once hearing from Felix Mummalo, who was a principal in the Viper Company the bottom had Sutphen designs or attributes - the top deck was his orriginal design - He was assembling them on Bridge Ave, in Point Pleasant NJ - he lived near by !

Phil- you are correct,I could not put my finger on it right away. Mavericks, I think were heavy and possibly 8'2" wide?

As of now she still has the Break Out name on her, & still looks very good. The boat needs all the rigging and powertrain replaced as it has been removed. Break Out has been sitting  since it's last raced in the 90's.

Steve Baum raced a 8 Metre Christ Craft back in 1974 called the Maverick. At the September 21 1974 Blue Lagoon race Baum's Maverick flipped killing Baum's crewman Walt Burns, that was the first U,S death in offshore racing. The 8 Metre hull was damaged, and from that hull Baum made the 32' Maverick hulls.

Took both pic's at the same time at Sun UP Marina race around 1979. Thats Darrell in the Maverick bilge. Back them Louie [Miss Gallo] use many different engines combinations & local engine builders not having much luck.. Eventually I think he used KS&W..

Red started racing on Lake St Clair in a 22'Chris Craft XK Crain Mutiny around 1974. By the late 70's Red would be a crew member in the Maverick with Steve Baum, winning the worlds in 1979 in sport class. Some of the other teams Red has raced with over the years are Lew Cooper's Miss Gallo, Gary Stuewe's Nasty. Red can even be credited with giving Bob Kaiser a start in Reds rent a ride Active cat. :drink:

Thanks for sharing pics and info,it is interesting to see how many threads tie the sport together over the years!

Ryan Beckley 02-25-2011 03:46 PM

Red has been around for A LOOOONG time. My mother worked with his sister in Key West when I was young. He also raced in Skater Express, Race Rock, Cayo MoTown, Cat Can Do, Geo Dynamic Industries, Daddy Cool Too, and many more.

CIG3 02-25-2011 04:06 PM

Red goes back a long way. Loved sitting around listening to the stories.

Back in 2000 "Red" and I ran neck and neck for the GLSCS Boat Whore award, he won by racing in 4 differant boats the same season to my 3. That was a great party.

PowerplayDave 02-25-2011 09:59 PM

innerrage 02-25-2011 10:45 PM

For anyone that cares or is interested. I am currently good friends with Red, He just won his 50th checkered flag, throttling Crazy Rythm in the St Clair Riverfest On 7/28/24. He was also inducted into the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame November of 2023.
