Greetings – All Old and New Boat Racers, Families, Friends and Associates. For the benefit of those that have never attended OFF, I would like to take this opportunity to give you a short history and synopsis of just what it is all about. Best Regards - Steve Sirois
OFF 2009 Three years ago in 2008, Brownie (Allen Brown) put on a party in conjunction with an offshore race. He aptly named it “Legends Of Offshore”. As one might expect, anything done by the “Legend” himself, it was a great gathering of old boat racers. Many old friendship were renewed and many new ones established. As well, great quantities of adult beverages were consumed, many old stories (and lies) were told, and broad ear to ear smiles prevailed. I reconnected with an old Lake X acquaintance in the name of Jim Hauser. Jim had worked at Lake X in the 1960’s and, after a stint of toting a rifle through the jungles of Viet Nam, he returned to the employ of Kiekhaefer Mercury Marine for many years. Later he had moved to the Jupiter Florida area where he was a successful yacht broker. Having recently semi-retired, a few months after Brownies “Legends” party Jim called me to discuss the possibility of throwing another gathering of similar nature. We decided that since the event would be in conjunction with an Offshore Super Series race (AKA OSS) that we should choose an appropriate name for our event that neatly coincided the OSS race. Somehow we arrived at the acronym “OFF” since it rhymed with OSS. Don’t ask me how that happened…..I don’t have the slightest recollection. Never the less, we decided that it had a nice ring to it and pressed onward. Next we had to figure what the heck the acronym “OFF” stood for. We jokingly threw all sorts of suggestions around until Jim said, “How about Old Farts Forever?”. Now, he may try to blame that one on me. Quite frankly, I not sure which of us came up with it. But due to our ever increasing age and the fun factor, we agreed, “Why not”. Thus was born “Old Farts Forever” or “OFF”. We discussed the possibility that a some might find the name mildly offensive and, in that regard, we were correct. I think that we probably operated under the premise that, as one gets older, one has a bit more freedom to say things that might not be prudent at a younger age. The idea being that people think that, due to our advanced age, we might have lost a few marbles, and therefore forgive our lack of proper etiquette. Predictably, when we threw this whole thing out there on a few boat racing forums, some did offer their objections to the name. And then came the “Legend” himself. Brownie stated clearly and forcefully, in a forum, “I’m an Old Fart, and proud of it!”. That sealed the deal and established our motto of “Old Farts Forever And Proud Of It”. However, two years hence, we have attracted much family participation in the event, and responded to that fact by stating that we shall now simply call it “OFF”. People can attach whatever words they wish to that acronym. Some may be more family friendly and/or politically correct than “Old Farts Forever”, while some may be considerably more ribald. It really doesn’t matter since it is the nature of the event itself that has become important. Now that I have gotten how this thing was born out of the way, let me proceed to what happened next. Jim and I started our preparations for OFF2009 approximately 10 months prior to the October event. Jim worked tirelessly pounding the pavement in the Jupiter area to line up event venues, hotels, etc.. He adroitly managed to fly under the radar of the local government officials in regards to permits, fees and other such minutiae. I launched myself into several internet boat racing forums to publicize the event. Over the intervening months, with the fantastic support of many forum participants, we gathered a lot of steam and notoriety. We established the basic nature of the event as follows: A gathering of old boat racers and their associates from “Back In The Day” to socialize and have a little fun. All events will be very informal. There are no registration fees and no fees to attend any of the scheduled events. All costs (lodging, food, drinks, entertainment, golf, fishing, etc.) will be the responsibility of each individual. This concept will allow OFF to go ON, regardless of the economy. Immediately, the old boat racers, as well as many newer ones, started coming out of the woodwork and momentum began to build. Some offered to bring boats to put on display and actually run if we could arrange for an in water event. Jim pursued the in water event, and was headed for success when we ran afoul of the “rights” of the Florida manatee to not be disturbed by those nasty boaters. Jim arranged for a public street party at Abacoa, with boats on display, while the old racers gathered in the adjacent JJ Muggs Restaurant. Geico/AMF Racing offered to have an open house at their race shop, and a final gathering was arranged at Brix Italian Fishery Restaurant. Somewhere along the way, Charlie Wolff graciously offered to perform an aerial salute to all of the old boat racers that had “crossed that final finish line”. We had decided early on that we would operate with no budget and, in the end, determined that we had spent a total of $14 on paper name tags. As October approached and the intensity level increased, we had arranged to get together with a very few “helpers” at the Brix Italian Fishery on Thursday evening to discuss and plan for the next two day’s events. To our surprise, 20 plus people turned up at Brix. We did a little planning, a bit of drinking, a lot of socializing, a lot of story-telling, and tons of laughing. The following events themselves were more fun than we could have possibly imagined. I will not even try to describe them in this epistle. OFF 2010 AND THEN…we moved on to OFF2010. We employed the same formula that had been so successful the previous year and added three new events. We made the Thursday evening event part of the open program. For that event, we gathered at the Sugarcane Bistro Restaurant for the kickoff and much frivolity. Also, Katy Jones Steiger, Don Winer and Chuck Woodruff did in depth interviews of old racers to be saved for posterity. Those interviews will be available in a future website that Katy is working on. Additionally we added a Sunday morning wrapup forum to discuss our future. During OFF2009, we had connected with the amazingly affable Cadillac McDaniel. He expressed a desire to join the team. His presence was like a quadruple dose of caffeine. He woke us up to the potential to create a quantum leap on-the-water event. AND HE DELIVERED!!!!! Cadillac has a country casual property on the Okeechobee Waterway that he has aptly named “BYBLOS”. At great effort, he arranged what many feel is the signature event of OFF. There was a magnificent gathering of boat racers, family, associates and friends at BYBLOS as a fleet of very impressive boats were on display and performed fly-bys to the delight of the crowd. Cadillac and his staff meticulously provided for all of the necessities and wants of those in attendance. Also our attention was directed to the sky as Charlie Wolff once again performed his aerial salute followed by an impressive aerobatic demonstration. We are not commercial in nature. However, we have no objection to organizations, clubs or commercial enterprises associating with us. What is OFF2011…?
“Old Friends Forever”, OFF2011 in Jupiter/Stuart Florida, 20-23 October 2011. This is a gathering of old boat racers and their associates from “Back In The Day” to socialize and have a little fun. All events will be very informal. There are no registration fees and no fees to attend any of the scheduled events. All costs (lodging, food, drinks, entertainment, golf, fishing, etc.) will be the responsibility of each individual. This concept has allowed OFF to go ON, regardless of the economy.
Who….? All types of boat racers and/or anyone remotely associated, to include families. Those who just want to meet and greet some of the legends of boat racing are also welcome. We could not possibly send out personal invitations to everyone. More OFF2011 information
Thursday evening at The Dive Bar: There are Public Docks at the Riverwalk Plaza if you care to come by boat. Unfortunately, there is not space to display boats on the land. Friday afternoon open house at AMF/Geico Racing shop: This is like the ultimate candy shop for boat racers. They literally open the doors and provided guided tours as well as allowing you to just wander (and wonder) through the place. Recently I had a very nice conversation with British offshore racer Richard Carr. He has acquired the 46’ aluminum, triple engine, V bottom Cougar that Al Copeland, Bill Sirois, Dick Clark and Stan Ware ran in the 1985 Miami to New York Race. Our own Cadillac McDaniel was on the logistics team for that race. Richard will be restoring the boat at AMF/Geico to be run in European offshore races. You will get to once again place your own eyes on this historic boat. Friday evening event at the Jupiter Point Marina/Wylder’s Waterfront Bar & Grill: The Marina also has Public Docks if you want to come by boat. Additionally, the Marina has a great area to set up your boat on land for display. This event is in lieu of past years Abacoa street party and boat display. The owner has stated that he will advertise the event for public participation. He will also provide security and even move boats inside the boat storage building in case of bad weather. I am told that getting boats in and out of the display area is much easier that it was at Abacoa. Saturday at Cadillac’s was a great day for everyone last year and looks to be even better this year: For those of you that were not there last year, Cadillac provided for the comfort of visitors by having a food & drink vendor, toilet facilities, lots of shaded areas, a great sound system to keep folks informed, ample parking for cars and boat displays, great launch and recovery ramp, safety boats, perfect viewing area overlooking the waterway, and a flat water straight course for flybys. Most importantly, Cadillac provided a level of genuine happy hospitality that is unrivaled. And then, Charlie Wolff performed the solemn aerial salute to all old boatracers that have “crossed the final finish line” followed by a great aerobatic display in his Velox aircraft. The whole day was truly a family event. Some suggested that, this year, we should stay there into the evening instead of going to another location to party. While that seemed to be a great idea, there were legitimate concerns about partying too much and then hitting the road on the dark two lane Kanner Highway. The last thing we want to do is have an exciting and safe day on the water, only to get someone hurt or in trouble on the road home. Obviously, there is also a concern for potential liability. And finally, Cadillac’s country location does not lend itself to drawing the public. Last year you got to see Rich Luhrs set the best speed for the day at 107+MPH in his Switzercraft Wing along with other historic machines such as Mike Mullins’ 1968, Ceaser Scotti driven, twin OMC Molinari. This year you will see more of the same and many things you did not see last year. How about the Jackie Wilson 1978, 127+MPH Cosworth/Hodges ET/KT boat that spun people’s heads around. The boat is currently in restoration and Mark Wilson has assured it will be afloat at Cadillac’s during OFF2011. Many others have indicated that they will be there and bring their boats. We will inform you of those as they firm up. Saturday evening event at Sugarcane Bistro: Last year we started out at the Sugarcane. This year we will wrap up OFF2011 there. This is a great food and party atmosphere place. Great stories, and a few lies, were and will be told. Finally, we will wind up a three day silent auction to allay some of our expenses and to set up for OFF2012. You will have the opportunity to bid on a full day offshore fishing trip on a 38’ Rampage, an offshore ride in the 85+MPH Geico V bottom with Scotty Begovich and/or Mark Granet at the wheel, or a ride with Charlie Wolff in his aerobatic Velox aircraft. Also, Odell Lewis and Billy Seebold have once again promised some wonderful memorabilia from their past racing days for the auction. As we have said from the very beginning, we have operated with no budget. However, we have had expenses along the way that have been covered by several generous people and organizations. We are certainly grateful to those that I previously mentioned for their auction donations. Also, the great folks at www.donzi.org have donated substantial dollars to help the setup at BYBLOS for the Saturday “get wet day”. While we are not comfortable asking for help, there are a couple of things that would help make the event better if any of you feel so inclined. We will let you know what those are in future updates, but right now we are looking for a few golf cart to shuttle people back and forth on Saturday at “BYBLOS”. An old friend once said, “Life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes”. The same could be said as we approach the start of OFF2011. The next 40 days will pass in the blink of an eye. And then, in another blink, it will be over. If you still have not decided to attend, consider this. This is a one of those few opportunities in life to spend 3 or 4 days just enjoying the company of old friends, and meeting new ones in a completely relaxed and friendly gathering. OFF 2010......Attending this was one of my personal best memories of 2010.....and that includes being on the winning boat in the Around Long Island Marathon last September.
Already have my reservations made to be at OFF 2011. If you want to see the boats, and hear the stories right from the guys that actually were there, this is the place to be. We plan on bringing the original race boat of Don Aronow...The Cigarette. It was a Formula 233 with a big block single with sterndrive. It last raced in 2008, taking a first place in the Historic class of the Miami to Bimini event. |

For those of you that wish to display your boats at Wylder's on Friday (21 Oct), here's some details. You can park at the marina starting at about 11:30AM.
We will have people from Geico Racing there to help you, and they will also provide security if you wish to drop and go to Geico race shop Open House. Hopefully, by tomorrow, I will be able to provide you with names and cell phone numbers for the folks that will park you. We got word today that Wilson Custom Marine Race Shop in Stuart will be hosting an Open House on Friday morning from 10:00AM -2:00PM. Their address is 3340 SE Gran Park Way, Stuart, FL 34997. This is Jackie, Mark and Craig Wilson, the amazing 3 generation racing family. We are extremely pleased to add this event to OFF2011 and are certain that you will be pleased. CARE AND FEEDING OF YOUR BOAT AT OFF2011 We are truly looking forward to your presence at OFF2011 and think we have pretty well covered the care and feeding of you. However, we have not yet said much about the care and feeding of your boats if you are bringing them for display and/or running on Saturday. Once you are parked, you will be asked to disconnect and move your vehicle from the display area. Please bring your own wheel chocks. Lauren & John will be remaining on location to provide security. Later that evening, after the party at Wylder’s, you can remove your boat or you can leave it overnight and pick it up on Saturday morning. Jupiter Point Club & Marina will have security on site throughout the night. Off2011 Auction Procedures
It is now 10:45 Tuesday night. On my way home from a late meeting, Jim Hauser called me to tell me that OFF has been cancelled…..JUST KIDDING ☺. But hopefully that got your attention. What he really told was that we have received another substantial item for our auction. He told me what it is, and I’m excited, but I don’t have enough details yet to be comfortable releasing it. Perhaps tomorrow. I will be on the road tomorrow, so if you only get this by e-mail, you will have to go to http://www.screamandfly.com/showthre...ff-2011/page15 or later page to find out more. ALSO, I can now tell you that the auction procedures have changed a bit. The basic auction will now take place at 12:00Noon Saturday at Cadillac’s BYBLOS. At least one item of significant value (possibly the new item) will be held back and sold by lottery. I don’t yet know the price of lottery tickets, but they will be sold both at Cadillac’s and at Sugarcane Bistro Saturday evening where the lottery drawing will take place. Those of you looking at the pictures above of Don Pruett and Bill Sirois, two of the greatest Offshore racers of all time, might take note of something they had in common. Did you notice the boats they are seated in? Are they 44'MTI's?...Are they 42' OL's?....Are they even Offshore race boats?
You don't learn to drive a Coast Guard Cutter or an aircraft carrier without small boat training first...and racing a 110+ mph outboard tunnel hull prepares you for anything a fast Offshore boat can throw at you. You also learn set up, props, finding the "edge", and hull tuning basics that teach you to not simply throw more horsepower at every problem... Where do you think JT, Jerry Gilbreath and Joe Imprescia started....in a 40 foot Skater?....Heck no, but they represent the best in the sport.....and Brownie's exploits to the Bahama's in a 16 foot Donzi speaks volumes. Even Aronow built a 17 foot tunnel hull and set a diesel kilo record in a small vee. Something to think about as gas prices are spiraling upward and dollars are getting tighter. You can race a smaller model and get greater satisfaction.... T2x |
Who knows what the ramp is like at Timer Powers Park? I understand the water level is down and there may be a problem launching our jersey skiffs there.
There should be a half dozen or so skiffs for the show at Wylders Friday night, We are looking forward to it. Richie |

I scored a couple of Woody Wax boat clean up kits today and dropped them with Laura this afternoon. Woody Wax is directly across the street from me and they were kind enough to pitch in. We'll see you this evening, and tomorrow
