great looking boat, love the solid look . i would run small blocks 383 or 406 ll depends on what you want to do and how much money and drives you have now ,good luck

well i already have 1 complete 350 and already have 2 cush drives for small blocks then on the other hand i have a fresh machined 454 just needs assembled and a set of mercruiser manifolds already so its up in the air..

any one know if the 292 flywheels are same crank pattern as small block???

Nice boat!!!...but I'm jaded :evilb:

I think you have a very rare boat indeed!!! I say keep the original 6's to have for an original restoration but re-power with a pair of Small Blocks. These boats perform great with a pair of 260 ~300 horse Chevy's on No 1 or Alpha drives...high 50's to mid 60's depending on the load and props. Believe it or not...the Small Block Chevy V8 is about 100 lbs lighter than the Inline six!!! You save about 200lbs with twins. Build another Small Block to match the one you have. You're already set up for twins so take advantage of it....less work in the long run.

There is not a better riding boat in that size range than the 255 Formula...especially in rough water. My neighbor who is a part time boat mechanic was out with me yesterday in 2'~4' head seas and was amazed how well a 32 year old 24 deg deep vee Formula still handles the rough stuff.

Let us know what you do.

ive seen your boat you have been working on any way i can get a bunch of pictured emailed to me?? im waiting on interior to come back from upholster and have to build a few more things to take to them... i really want the sound of the v,8s with thru hulls as im a v8 man but i havent seen any of these boats with the 6,s in them online wonder if formula can tell me how many or what the deal is... prevouis owner said he gps,d 53 mph with the boat

jason y 09-06-2011 10:44 PM

really need to see the engine compartment area to see where the v 8 mounts up at as the 6,s have a front mount on them no sides

Jason,

Be glad to...the motor mounts are real simple. You can see the way it's set up when I send you some pics. PM me with your email.

Try calling Formula customer service and ask for Scott...he might have some production info for you if you give him the hull number. You didn't say what year yours is but I suspect yours might be one of the first. I think the V8's were standard by '78 or '79.

Jason, Scott and the guys at formula are real helpful. I had a '81 233LS OMC and from Sprinks prompting I called them and they helped me identify everything down to the original upholstery color

Very sharp looking 255. Do you have big water nearby where you can utilize the wave crushing capabilities of that hull? Post interior pics too!

jason y 09-15-2011 07:14 PM

i live about 4 minutes from a good size lake that we frequent where about 45 minutes from ohio river it gets pretty rowdy up there with the big barges going by and such get some good size swells ive been up there in 22-23 ft deep v hullo boats and its pretty rough on them at times ..I cant wait to try this one out maybe my wife will like going to the river more know time will tell redoing interior and carpeting and any wood i dont like now still have plenty to do

Another page from the history books of the 233. This photo shows Merrick Lewis, owner of Formula with his new race boat Holocaust.....it had twin Daytonas....with just a little twist.....both motors ran out on a single shaft and prop.

Brownie used the same concept later with a 28 foot Donzi and won the Miami - Nassau race with it.
