Yes, I know how you feel! I'm also in the process of bringing back to life a very rare 28' Checkmate 2800SX outboard. The boat is the sister ship to the old Ashland Express race boat run by Checkmate's very own Bill Combs. Very few were built with the transom cut for outboard power and the cockpit moved aft. It gives the boat a very aggressive look and makes it appear longer than it is!

I worked for a Checkmate dealer in 85,86,87 and we ordered one of the first with a single 454 for the Cleveland boat show. It was an outboard with the well and they made it at the factory into an I/O for us because we wanted an I/O. It fell apart and we scrapped the hull and parted it out. It was a good looking boat.

Good job, and going to be an amazing machine when done. Owning a former raceboat is awesome, and an all aluminum one is very unique. Keep the pics coming!

What would something like that cost to buy, ballpark figure?

The aluminum hulls are still around. The nice thing is if the hull is stripped of power and built out of the 5000 series aluminum, The structure will need a couple weld touch up's and the rest is cosmetic body work and rigging.
If you find one stripped out and ready for the crusher you will pay aluminum scrap price. There are a lot of nice hulls out there that are ready for power where the owners wanted the frills of a fiberglass hull and swapped over the power. As a result: Going aluminum scrap price per pound or a unit ready for power $10.000 to $50.000 depending on length and rigging left in the hull.

I think just like the cars, just a later start, the era of restoring and needing a muscle boat of later years is starting to come around. Like an old chevelle just bigger in every aspect.

Great job. Looks like a ton of work making that aluminum come back :):)

I have not counted them but it is thousands of 5in. swirls. It is about as fun as for example, changing gear lube.

I am so glad that you save her from the crusher Ron!!! I too grew up watching Rascal race was such a treat in the 80's to watch all the teams come into CLYC which was my back yard until 06' . I also remember the M-3 Rascal boat before he got this one thinking Andy said it was a 30' Corsa later raced as Sorcerer by Jimmy V. , Also remember a few of them Scarabs you had Ron the 40-43 that was blueand whit then all white and the 30' Panther will never forget the name of that one 'Am I Evil" !!! Like I said earlier my back yard was literally CLYC and spent many days down on the W. Island at the blue A-frame on the back channel over at the Stopars..... Ahhhh them were the days. I have a few hard pics from back before the canopy and many more after it was installed in the 90's from the races Divsional and National events. I'll have to hit you up one weekend and bring them by, I'm just in Fairport. Would be awesome to reminisce over a few cold ones.

Wow, what is the deadrise on Rascal? That is probably the most radical Vee I've ever seen unless the pictures just distort the perspective. What a fantastic job you've done on her.

Congratulations!

Dan

It's such a unique boat. I love the lines of the hull. It's definitely a one of a kind beauty.
