Jim Hauser Has Passed

It is with extreme sorrow that we all lost a true friend yesterday in the person of Jim Hauser. I first met Jim at Lake X in 1964. He worked for many years with the Kiekhaefer Mercury Corporation. He also served in the US Army and, while in Viet Nam, he suffered a severe stab wound in hand-to-hand combat with Viet Cong. Later he was a successful yacht broker in south Florida. We reconnected via the internet and “Screamandfly” forums in February 2005. We met in person again at Brownie’s 2008 “Legends of Offshore” gathering. Shortly thereafter, Jim called me and suggested that we arrange another gathering of all the old boat racers from “back in the day”. Thus was born OFF2009. At that event, Cadillac McDaniel joined us and we became the “Three Amigos” for OFF2010 and OFF2011. Despite significant health problems, Jim worked tirelessly to make OFF a wonderfully pleasant event for all that attended. I shall fondly, and forever, remember his smile and easy-going mannerisms. – Steve Sirois

Jim was a great friend and will be missed. He was also the race promoter for the Palm Beach World Championship coming this Oct and the race will be promoted in his Honor by Nick Scafidi from the Aquamania team. Jim was also the godson of the late Carl Kiekhaefer

This is sad news...he had recently been working to re-establish the Palm Beach World Championship. It is only fitting that it be held in his honor.

I'm so glad that Jim came to NJ a few weeks back for the OPA Awards Party. It was great that all of the teams got to meet him for a few hours. I hope we can properly honor him this October and thanks to those that will pick up where Jim left off with bringing racing back to Palm Beach County.

Rest in Peace.

After spending a few hours with Jim last month, I am left with a real sense of loss. People come into your life for various reasons, some good some not. I feel that I missed out on the oportunity, to know Jim better. Such a gentle soul, and a world of knowledge. Our best to the family, we have another Angle in our corner. Godspeed. Smitty

It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of one of the sport's true gentlemen. Jim Hauser (gofish7070) passed away after years of battling heart disease. He was surrounded by his family and the loving prayers of an army of friends. His passing leaves a hole in our OFF fraternity that will never be filled and, in fact he was one of the founding fathers ("The Three Amigos", Jim, Cadillac McDaniel, and Steve Sirois) of the event and organization. That team created one of the best boat racing events ever in under a year and Jim handled most of the venue planning. His ability to win people over was truly amazing and the strong friendships he made during this process are a testament to his unique class and character....

As a second generation "Mercury man" his passion and desire to build the sport of boat racing back to its former glory was unparalleled and his respect for its history was unwavering. He was deeply immersed in creating an Offshore race in Jupiter, Florida scheduled for next fall. He came to me with the idea last year and, after first trying to talk him out of it, I put him in touch with OPA. I last saw him on a fishing trip down there in January and he proudly pointed out the various highlights of the venue and went through the list of permits and approvals he was dealing with. Here was a man who clearly loved three things; boat racing, fishing and his family and friends.

In the end Jim was a guy with a huge heart and a charitable nature that was infectious...a truly good man.

We will miss you buddy....... but all of the OFF's on the other side will gain a great ol' racer....

May we all race again together someday.
