Bob Connell has passed.

Bob Connell was the navigator on the record breaking run from Miami to New York in 1974. They did the run in 22 hours and 46 minutes.

Doc Magoon was the owner driver and Gene Lanham was the throttleman. The boat was a 40 foot Cigarette and the power was Mercruiser / Stan Irwin engines. If they broke the record, they were to be called Mercruisers, if they had an engine failure, they were to be called Stan Irwin engines.

Bob was a famous sail boat racer and crewed on many America Cup boats, 12 meter styles. He was co owner of Newport Shipyard and died at his home in Rhode island.

Sports Illustrated once described him as "Built
like a brick lighthouse".

May he rest in peace.

Bob rode those 1252 miles without a complaint. But he had no desire to ever get back in one of those "Offshore Power Boats"

Rest in Peace, Bob---

Hi, this is Bob's daughter-in-law, Kristen Connell. May I ask if this is Doc Magoon posting? We love the photo - is that Bob on the deck? Would you mind contacting me at [email protected]? Thank you very much and thanks to all who have expressed their sympathy over Bob's passing.
