Lights Out??

Hi all, I have grown up boating all my life in Michigan. I was wondering if anyone remembers an all black offshore boat named Lights Out that would have been running in Lake St. Clair in the early to mid1970s? I was a young boy on my Grandfathers 36 Chris Craft cruiser when I remember this boat jumped our wake and blew by us. It was very exciting and left an impression on me some 35/40 years latter. Unfortunately at that time I was probably under 10 years old so really wouldn't know make or model of the boat other than being a black hull with its name on the sides.

I have the same memory of that boat. It was parked at jefferson beach.

I saw it @ Sun Up Marina, or Bobby Moore's Shipping Channel marina on the Salt River. Remember the yellow 40' Cig, called [Big Bird , King Kong] or the 38' Excalibur PEGASUS ?? All back in the mid 70's.

How about the one called booby trap? May have been a Corsa.

Lake St Clair was ground zero of the Great Lakes for offshore boats & offshore racing from the 1970's to around 2005, it was a GREAT RIDE.

Great!, My Grandfather kept his Chris Crafts at Miller Marina since 1953 up till the early 80’s. We were probably making the run either to the marina from the Clinton River Boat Club in the Middle channel or vice versa when Lights Out did the drive by. Did you know what kind of boat it was?

Do you remember the make of Lights Out? I moved to the North end of the Lake in 2006 and rack store on the Salt River at Anchor Bay Marina.

Greg they were E Volvo drives. When Kenny Black went to Jack Roush Ford power in this Magnum the E drives did not stand a chance.:party-smiley-004:

Lee 10-10-2013 09:43 AM

Black with white/green lettering "lights out sock it to me" ?

Drake22.250 10-10-2013 11:14 AM

With Kenny Nothing stood a chance. When Kenny had the Whopper his Cary, we would go out perch fishing in 6 footers. He would get on plane and gunnit screaming this is whopper weather. LOL He lived full throttle. The tops look similar to my 280's? Any E Drives around yet?

Lee 10-10-2013 03:25 PM

His original Whopper before the Cary was a red wooden Lyman with Roush motors and it was fast too.

It was a Corsa, named after a gentlemans club on 8 mile Rd in Detroit, at some point it was stolen and found on the beach in Bell River Canada.:party-smiley-004:

When I new the boat the guy tried to launch his wife out of it. He later tried to blow her up on his bigger 44 foot trojan in the covered wells at jeff beach. They found 14 sticks of dynomite on the boat-that would have left a mark. His boating days ended, never saw him again. Think the name of his big boat was froide and guild or some thing.

Katanna 10-10-2013 06:59 PM

Did lights out have a woman painted on the side? Or am I haveing a memory lapse?

METALMUNCHER72 10-10-2013 07:19 PM

i dunno about those, but I remember a 30' Superboat-Supercat, named "Lights Out" Red with white letters, almost looked identical to "Extractor" Superboat cat. Don't think many of those were built??

Then there was a 30' yellow Scarab named Slap Shot that was tender to an old 50' Chris Craft also named Slap Shot...........Anybody else remember any other boats not mentioned from Lake St. Clair?? United America used to sit in a well at Michigan Owens. Their was also a 32 spectra at shipwreck marine in Detroit for a few years. It had twin turbos mounted on log exhaust. The little smidgen spectra went from randy kluge at Jefferson beach to randy victory at jeff beach. At that point it received some not so pleasing upgrades such as an arch and tall wrap around windshield. Still had the jomar engines in it. Was for sale in Ohio last year and the motors were replaced with small block 260s. Guy said it ran 52. Shame it used to be pretty fast.

Katanna 10-11-2013 09:28 PM

Anybody know what happened to lunatic fringe? Big orange arronow with hull number marked experimental. Another twin turbo boat, think it was 43 ft. Ran 118 which was fast for its day. I remember putting the heads on with Mike Bennet and it used fishing line and soft copper.

Sorry h20, iPad auto correct.
That's the beast. I still have a couple snapshots of it. The orange was so bright you could see it miles away.

And speaking of Detroit & Scarabs Here is a pic of my 38' Scarab that I bought from the Porterfield Willson [Detroit Pontiac car dealer] estate. This Scarab was originally's Sonny Gandee's who had Showdown marine down in Wyandotte Mi. Sonny sold it to Poterfield and it was call WAR HAWK. Because of it's checkered past :picard1: I had it quickly repainted it bright yellow with flames up @ Tiger Fiberglass in Maryville Mi. It was a tank & not very fast but BIG., where it is today ????????
