I was wondering what some of the fastest old-school boats out there. how fast where they stock? Say pre-1990 and older.

Back in the 80's One model Hustler was 100 mph out of the box. I believe. JOHN SR

1980 ish 30' Velocity with the Merc 475 hp turbo motors, Fountain also built one of the same set-up

"Still Crazy came a couple years after that event. The 102mph event was at lake X in May of '80 with Steve & Whipp, Steve's Pleasure boat 30' Vel. with full monkey fur interior, seating, head, etc., Mercruiser stock & warranted 475hp Turbo 454's w/ No.2 Speedmasters & reg. gas. Mercruiser had just come out with that package, which didn't last long due to high abuse (no kidding?). They ran it again through APBA speed traps a month later in Sarasota at 104+, salt water being quicker. We used that quick & plush boat as a factory demo for about 6 mos. & sold it to a guy who kept it at Ocean Reef club in the upper keys. It never raced, as it was so plush & the power package didn't fit a racing class. I actually took well qualified prospective buyers for demo rides in that thing, and a few went for that much go, but most went for something a bit tamer. Obviously we were very cautious.
Fountain tried to beat the 100 mark with the same package within weeks of Stepp's run. He failed & had the power boosted considerably in order to make the claim that he was just as fast. Velocity was the 1'st Offshore PB to "officially" record those kind of speeds, which was a point of pride for the mark & a strong selling feature. The No. 2 speedmaster drives worked VERY well with that hull. No Vee bottom race boats I know of were going that speed, because of their size & weight, fuel load, & older hull designs. A boat needed to be heavy & tough to survive that kind of punishment, and top speed was usually not the priority during that era..........survival was. "

Magnums from the 1970's ran in the 60's with 280 Trs small blocks, big block boats with European & American power ran in the 70's...

The '84 Fountain 10 meter I owned came from the factory with turbo motors.

The performance report I have said that they were 496's at 630hp. The boat ran 92 on a 30 degree day light fuel load at 5200, speedy two's.

I was told that Fountain cracked the hundred mph barrier when they took those motors originally designed by Gale Banks and were copied by Joey Griffin, built to just over 900hp.

This boat was originally delivered to Ocean Beach Marine up here in NJ in 1974 with the stock 350cu.in/395 hp MerCruiser Tempest Package directly from the factory. The boat cost $32K new then and ran an honest 74 mph.

I know this because my was third owner, but the delivering salesman, Brad, (who is dead as is my father) we met numerous times at the NYC Boat Show in the early 1990's told us all of this, and the original owner Ike, who I did not meet but some of you old timers can confirm this data.

So, 74 mph in 1974, from the factory, for $32K

This picture was in the 1990's, my father driving and at 81 mph on radar with 2 x 454 cu. in. BBC, still with the same/orginal TRS drives, engine boxes, paint, ect.

How come Skater doesn't make the list ?

Ocean Outboard Skater (Tony) with their 32' with ther triple 2.4's was the real deal back then, from the O/B standpoint as well as all the 24' s Skater made, with stock Mercury power.

I miss being at Lloyd's Creek with my father, thanks for thinking of him.
