32' Cary Information...
Trying to track down information on the original 32' Cary Beep Beeps... Everyone says "you need to talk to Charlie". But I can't get to Top Banana to ask ... His mailbox in both forums is full and no response from the HORBA site which is being rebuilt. Any assistance or relay of request would be appreciated. Going to need some details for the restoration. --- Regards

Yes... we gutted it and blasted it. Dean has the transom done and replaced the forward bulkhead and cockpit floor. I'm building the motors now and gathering parts.
Do you know the history on the boat? Owners? I know it lived in NY for a while. A couple bits and pieces of a foreigner owning it and sending it to Miami to be sold. Sat on your lot maybe for many years, then to SC and then to NC? Don't know... just what I read. Any photos I could track down. If it was one of the 32 Beep Beeps and I've heard there were 3... supposedly Charlie has photos. Just looking for anything I can find. Thanks in advance... John The link you sent... I don't see anything there that pertains to that boat??? |
There should be a couple of the 32 Beep Beep in the Cal 500 stuff.
The boat was owned by Al Schwanke and Jim Tripp (Chao/ 34' Coyote) of Ft. Lauderdale for a while and was called "Grass Hopper" and then it was owned by Bobby Lathem of Lathem Marine. The boat's been around. Todd |
Todd I'm certainly not an expert on these, but seems that all the photos of the Cary's with the 3 ventilation holes on each side are the 32's and the 4 ventilation holes are the 38's. The "Beep Beeps" started out in 1975 running the 32' Production Class. Then they went to the 38's. Most of the photos out there are the 38's, so not that boat. That's point I keep being refereed back to HORBA to clarify. But currently the site is "asleep".

Hey guys,
Marc here from CAL500. If you need any information on these boats, feel free to email my father at I'm pretty sure he has some information on what you need to know, that and maybe who else to get in touch with. Cheers! |
Thank you Marc! I've sent an email to him. -- John

He had a smaller 32 that he ran in the Sports division of the Production classes. To run in Production, you had to run small blocks as there was a cu in limit that had a max allowed. You probably have the Sports boat. We do have some photos of that smaller boat but they are in the process of being scanned to be put up,on the HORBa site when it is redone. The Sports boat ran trs drive tops with Speedmaster lowers on them and the engines were staggered. If all that sounds like what you have it is the same boat. The earlier 32 Cary's of Don were much wider boats as you can tell by the width of a 36 Cigarette....they were 32 's stretched to 36. I noticed on the link to the Cal500 site there are a couple of photos of my 38 foot Top Banana. This Banana hull was a completely different design than Sonny used for La Tortuga. Count the number of strakes and notice their placement on the vee. JC Simon started with ideas that Sonny used and branched out to come up with the Banana design. Same mold was used for Coyotes later on also. Mold was blocked 4 feet and 34 footers were pulled...that is what Chaos race boat was a 34. |
Hi my name is Cary just like the boat. I think you may have my old boat. It was named Lazarus. It was white with staggered motors and number III drives. 1973. I knew the original owner and owned it until I sent it south to sell. I can tell you everything about it. I actually own Bob Latham s 29 Cary now. email me and I will give you any info. Or call me. . Or (315)382-8828. Thanks Cary

They are all Cary 32' but it looks to me as though the one with JCS standing next to it is different to the boat in the other shots. |
I think this is Lazarus. And yes, Bob's was a 29 not a 32. My bad.

Hi Charlie... Thanks for responding. I did get to talk to Cary (same name but not related), the guy from New York that previously owned the boat. He said that you would remember him as the "kid from New York" that got a lot of information from you about the boat. He said that Aronow sold the boat to Joe Timbello, a contractor friend of Don's and that it was hull #3. He wanted a race boat, but it was never raced. The boat was originally rigged by "Brownie" (and I'm sure everyone knows who that is, except me). Timbello kept the boat for about 10 years in upstate NY and then it got passed on.
That's the simpified version of the story I got so far. Don't know what you can add to it, or what photos you may have. Appreciate any information you may have. |
The post #11 shows JC Simon standing in his Coyote shop in Hollywood.
My Top Banana can be seen next to him still being built, with the number 66 on the side. The boat he is leaning on was a 29 footer and was called. Baby Beep Beep. If the kid from NY has a lot of information on the boat, that is probably all I could find at the time. Once we get the site up and running again, I will take another look and let you know if I can locate new info. I will be going though Charlotte NC in a few weeks, is Denver far from there? If there is an opportunity to stop, I would like to take a look at the boat and get some new photos' for the HORBA site. |
Thanks Charlie. Would love for you to be able to stop. My shop is right on I85 in Charlotte. The boat is up in Mooresville NC right now at the glass shop off of I77, about 30 minutes north of Charlotte.. So depending on where you're headed, one of those locations is on the way. I'm in the commercial printing business, if HORBA has any needs, I'd be willing to help out. We do it all, including limited edition artwork and prints. I'll make it worth your while to stop and share a little information. Just let me know. -- John

I sent you a PM. |
I built the 32 Cary Beep Beep when I worked for Frogs at Cary in 72,3,4,5.
|
Brownie... I was told by one of the previous owners that you rigged this boat originally. It's identical to the Beep Beeps, but was built for a guy named Joe Timbello, a contractor friend of Don's. Does that ring a bell? It's hull #3

Yes. I rigged it in 1976 with staggered big block mercs. It was dark red then.

Hey Brownie. It's me Cary from NewYork. I spoke with you last year or so when I rerigged Bob Latham 's 29 Cary hull with new merc 300 xs outboards. I talked with the new owner of the 32' Cary here that you rigged. I bought that boat from Joe the original owner. Remember it was redish orange named" Lon gone". Alan Ray from Rubrails.com sent me a picture of you and him in the boat going for a test ride in 1976. Nice to see someone is going to redo the boat. I bought it from Timbello restored it and had it for 10 years before the sharks got a hold of it and stole it from me. Nice to see you are still on the site setting people straight on the history of these great boats. God bless Cary
