attempt #2

Pretty sure that was one of the APeCO Factory race boats. Bob Sheer or Jack Mathes would know for sure.

If I'm not mistaken, that was the factory race boat.

What would you like to know?

Yes that was an Apeco boat back when Apeco owned Magnum. I know it had Volvo drives but I cannot remember what engines. I am pretty sure it was the first Maltese. I am still friends with the gut that is in the picture driving.

I took that shot.

Photos above are not the same as the red boat - notice the different deck !

Mbam 08-20-2014 04:57 AM

Northern, thanks but I have a few too many projects as it is :)

TMITCHELL 08-20-2014 05:54 AM

Mbam,
The statement that you made may have told me almost what I need to know. I know it IS hull #1. I have found the markings under the deck. For some reason the HIN was changed to an Ill state HIN and I currently in the process of having it changed back and titled correctly. I am also in the middle of restoring the boat and trying to get all info I can. There are only a coupla pictures of this boat in racing dress. I am thinking about finishing it as it is in the picture. Just want to make sure that it is the same boat.

TMITCHELL 08-20-2014 06:03 AM

Still have any pictures of it?

Mbam 08-20-2014 06:18 AM

I'll dig around and see what else I have.

Does it actually have a Magnum HIN? I think a lot of those old race boats did not have HIN's. So if not the state issued a HIN for the title and registration.

I'm pretty sure that was built back when the HIN system was first being established (1972 or so).

Kind off sounds like what I said about this Maltese back in this 2013 thread, post #12 & 15. http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/m...4-maltese.html

TMITCHELL 08-20-2014 09:37 AM

H2O you are correct. I have been trying to verify that it is the same boat. Hull #1 has been verified by markings under the deck in the fiberglass. Trying to verify race history.

Mbam 08-20-2014 09:43 AM

I think Joe Newman, Kieth Hazel and Jack Kraft raced it. I'll try and confirm that.

BROWNIE 08-20-2014 11:36 AM

Built 1968. No HIN until 1972

PARASAIL941 08-20-2014 03:13 PM

Love to see that boat with the original race colors. I'll try and find my pic's of your boat back in the day. I think I have one of the last Maltese 28's made according to Mr Vinyl's list. Mine is #96 (330/TRS ,DK Brown) and looking at the buyers names on the last two, #97 & #98 may have left the U.S.

mr vinyl 08-21-2014 12:34 AM

I have done all the research along with Harold at Magnum and we are sure it is Hull # 1.We were lead to believe it could have been #31,because of its late title date 7/17/75...which was 20 months after the 1st hull was pulled from the mold. That was not an uncommon occurrence them,.early #'s were often held for key buyers. It also has a front tank which Jack Kraft confirmed that was probably Apeco's show boat. Based on Tom's researched and various holes that were drilled on the boat, mainly the deck he questioned if it was a race boat...and he probably was right. We are quite certain IL. Will issue the new paper work as MAG28010775.
Also this boat had a HIN # that one of the previous owners ground out...in was at the top of the starboard side of transom, just below the rub rail.Bud

mr vinyl 08-25-2014 10:01 PM

Need to let you all know I just received notification from the title office of Illinois they will issue the correct HIN # for Toms Maltese...MAG28010775. Congratulations Tom...Bud

TMITCHELL 08-26-2014 07:58 AM

Wooohoo!!!!!

TMITCHELL 08-26-2014 08:33 AM

Bud,
I need to thank you for all that you have done for me and this project. You have been a great help and a wealth of knowledge since the day I picked the boat up.
Thanks,
Tom

Two classic race boats within a mile of each other. We need to have a boat show at Ft Smallwood or some sort of poker run.

TMITCHELL 08-27-2014 04:12 PM

I know I would be in and my buddy with the 66 triple hatch Donzi would be as well. I just need to get the boat done.
