38 Flatdecks>>> Cig or Scarab??????
So I have found 2 38 flatdecks I'm interested in. One is a 1984 Cigarette Top Gun that is fairly original but the motors have been done (540s dynoed @ 610 ea 100hrs) and the BW trans are redone. as well as the TRS drives. Full SS exhaust with captains call, nice solid boat, no swim platform, needs cleaned up a bit, has been kept on a lift in the upper Chesapeake bay near where I live, has no trailer. he has several extra TRS drives and props as well as a full cover that goes with it.The other is an 83 377 Scarab completely redone, gel coat, cabin interior, cockpit interior, tubular swim platform, Graffig monster gauges, motors are also recently done (540s @ 540 ea 70hrs) and new BW trans,TRS drives, turn key boat, with a trailer, but is 650 miles from me. Both are similar money (once a trailer is bought for the Cig).
Big question< I know the hulls are very similar but what about build quality of each, I have owned wellcrafts before, and like them alot, but I just did a sea trial on the Cig and was impressed with it as well. I know the the scarab is 9" wider, not that that makes a huge difference. But I did like the fact that the Cig has a tube molded in to run all the cables and wiring in, its little things like this that make me think the Cig is a better designed boat. It ran well, 67mph on my phone app GPS, in flat water using 24P 4 blades@5000 rpm. the owner of the Scarab states 70 on GPS. Buy the Cig that is local and needs a trailer and minor updates?? Or travel 10 hours to Michigan for the done Scarab on a trailer?? I will be using which ever one I choose in the Chesapeake bay as well as off shore in OCMD Not looking for a super fast boat just a solid well built set up that my family and I will be comfortable in |
I would do the Cig, but get a survey....
You can find used trailers on The hull truth also. I would get an alum 3 axle set for 15k or 18k. Wannabe |
Survey will be done on both for sure.

Buy the Cig better build quality in my opinio Mark |
Yup Looks just like that, same interior and all.
cig has better curb appeal...
Gotta think the cig will resell better, but both are nice looking rigs. With good surveys, don't think you you'll be unhappy either way
Just buy both!?!?! When you want the swim platform take the Scarab. When you don't take the Cig. But if you don't buy both I'm more partial to the Cigs. I've have my 86 Flat Deck for 7 years and love every summer.
Forget both of them and buy the only boat you'll ever need.....an Apache 41.....it's what they call an apex predetor!
I like the cig...plus it already has external steering.
The Cig sounded better when I was reading, then I saw the picture with the name on the side of the Scarab...go Cig. It sounds better all-around and as said before, it has better curb appeal with the clean graphics.
The scarabs graphics are just vinyl, but I just cant get past the turquoise cockpit
Buy the cig but dear lord take those chrome cruiser horns off the bow lol
tough call there.both are nice
Cig , no comparison imo .

(I'm a Scarab guy to the core, but these boat are almost identical--Cig looks better maintained, so.....) |
Yes, and I will have to find a white sports jacket to wear with my t-shirt!
zombie I went thru this exact dilemma with my last purchase of go fast…
couldn't decide between the 35 cig mistress flat deck and the Scarab 38 KV flat deck… if one appeals to your heart more then probably get that one however what matters most is what is available at the time.. .buy on condition power and build. when I was in the market the mistress was in way nicer condition than any KV scarab I could find. also it had better power and went faster!! there is something about the cig feel and cachet too.. however 38 scarabs are known for their big water handling and ride.. Personally for me as I have an early mistress the mahogany cockpit and low wind deflector drips with old school class.. so its really about timing and personal taste. both of those boats look good .so you can't lose! |

I believe that I have found a trailer for the Cig, I'm going to be scheduling a survey after I make him an offer on it. Its local, and I have talked to people on here that know the boat and got some good feedback on it, hopefully I will be getting some late October boating in on it!!
Best of luck with going after the Cig. Hopefully it all works out
I took the wife and kids down to look at the Cig today, and was able to really dig around on it, it definitely needs some work on the interior in the cockpit area, its usable, but its got alot of wear (to be expected from original 1984 stuff) I did find the frame that holds the bottom of the rear seat is rotten, so I hope that nothing else is. All the trim and drive indicator cables need replaced. The guy has it listed for 25k, he has already come down 3k with out me even bringing up money, with the work it needs and the fact it needs a trailer, what should I offer him? I'm sure he has 18-20k in the motors, but what is one of these old things worth done? I would say it needs an easy 6-8k of work to be real nice.
Depending on condition of the hull and drives 18-22 is fair. I've paid 10 for one with no power or interior.

That was my thinking as well
Zombie, did ya make a deal?
Just got done looking at the Cig one last time, giong to make an offer tonight.
it was also on my project boat list! But I'll let you grab it! just too far for me to go see it in this period of the year!!!
if only people selling all had a recent, a good survey on their boat to present, I'M sure many older boats would move a lot faster ! far from home, no hull survey, no mecanical inspection data, not enough time to organize all this easily, makes buying tougher... Back a couple years, i paid for 3 survey, on 3 different boats, that were all bad, owner did not want to pay the survey even if his boat was not as good as stated... I'm done! next one I buy, seller will have to prove me his boat is good, and pay for it! hell, I paid over 1000$ and got nothing except wasting my time! Good luck and let me know ! |

I have talked to several people that know this boat, as well as the engine builder, and feel like it will be a nice boat It needs some cosmetic stuff, but all in all it is a solid boat. He has had it for sale for a year now, so I'm going in low with my offer and see what happens. |
Zombie, I think you made the right choice. For the price of the Cigarette you cant lose. If it is an all original boat or an order restoration, your going to find problems like the seat bottom. Let us know what happens. I think a lot of us are sitting back in the chair with a beer in hand waiting on your response.

:boat::boat::boat::boat:
roll the drums !!!!!! |
Leaking Fuel tanks and a rotted transom, thats what I~d look for. Mine had both. Survey for sure.
The tanks have been done, and yes it will be surveyed for any structural issues.
:cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer: Did you make an offer? Did he accept?????????????? WE'RE ALL WAITING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:ernaehrung004:
Offer is in, just waiting myself!
Good luck bud! love old Flat decks!!
after really looking at this thing close, I am pretty sure its kevlar, no bracing in the bilge, and yellow lay up under the helm, does this make it any more desirable? We are about 5k apart from making a deal, and that is the only thing that has kept me in the negotiations.
5k is a long way apart on that boat in that range. Good luck.
