Is this the same boat? http://www.nationalpowerboat.com/38_...t_scarab-2.htm

Can anyone tell me what this gauge cluster is under the center part of the windshield?

JETTDOGG 01-19-2015 04:38 PM

Very cool do you have any scratch build plans or copies of your kit plans =pm me

Team Archer 01-19-2015 04:42 PM

tach's and indicators they add a little pod so that you didn't have to look down so much it was in front of you. That's a picture of Bettys boat notice the steering is on the right side so she could see out

I'CE 01-19-2015 05:38 PM

Dan, looks like Betty controlled the forward/reverse operations as well as the steering maneuvers around the docks. I don't see any rocker switches for the tab and drive trim angles. How where the controlled? Are those push buttons on her right involved, looks like it says flaps above one set. J sry not wishing to hi-jack the OP.

Team Archer 01-19-2015 05:46 PM

Yes fwd and rev were controlled by the driver around the dock but remember they were crash boxes. the trims were controlled by the two rocker switches under the grab handle and the buttons were overrides .

Team Archer 01-19-2015 05:47 PM

There are two sets of buttons if you look closely one set by the wheel and the other at the far side of the small gauges.

Ken_NJ 01-19-2015 07:47 PM

Jettdog, no plans on the model. As I see and find more pictures and see details, I make up the parts as I go along, basically winging it and come as close as I can. Your not hijacking for sure as I'd like to learn as much as I can so ask away.

My model as I found out happens to be an S type Scarab which is 30 feet and resembles this one: http://www.gm-powerboats.com/shop/da...061216_009.JPG

Is this Betty's boat before it was KAAMA?
http://www.nationalpowerboat.com/use..._6_350_284.jpg

So the set of 8 buttons are for the trim tabs with a duplicate set on the port side? And the switches under the grab are the override? Are the levers to the right for reverse?
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ty_cmc11_1.jpg

Team Archer 01-19-2015 08:13 PM

No that was Joey Ipolito's boat different than Betty's and yes you are correct about the switches and the shift levers the switches do both drives and tabs

Ok I see the rockers... so she had the start buttons and kill switches to her port....ya thanks Crash Boxes PIMA .. wish there was a nice close up of the dash and its labeled redundancies. J

Charlie mentioned the orange on KAAMA was international orange so I found a Model Masters International Orange and used that.

Here's the entire painting sequence of the hatch and engine covers. Not that I should point out my mistakes, I got the sizing on the numbers a bit too small.

Made my figures. For the arms started out with 12 guage Romex and layered clay until they were built up, then shaped the arms. Put the arms in the oven to harden the clay. Life jackets were also made from clay. Still have to make the hands and life jacket buckles. They stand 4 inches tall, each one is different with the driver (Betty) being the shortest. In the last picture, driver on the left, other two are where they will be in the boat with different arm poses.

The bolsters started out as a block of wood. Shaped it and cut slots to simulate the vinyl upholstery. Softened the edges with the Dremel to give it a cushy look. Each section was pinned for perfect alignment, then glued. Applied epoxy to the seats and this gave the look I needed. Added piping. Painted International Orange. Seats now done.

Dashboard. A machinist friend gets credit for making the parts for me. He also made the graphics for the gauge dials. I had them printed on vinyl from Callie Graphics. You can't see them in the finished panel since they are black but there are toggle switches to the right of the gauge cluster and also on the left side. See the last pic.

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Now that I have most of the parts made up, time to put it together. Here is the outcome. The NJ registration is my own customizing.

Got a pretty nice finish on the paint. After the clear coat, sanded the orange peel away, then wet sanded with 3000 and 5000 grit, used two different polishes and waxed. I reduced the file size for upload so lost some picture quality. Picture looks grainy to me.

Ran my boat at Leisure Village in Lake Wadill on Saturday 7-11. Hit 44.7mph.

If any of you guys are in the NJ shore area and want to see my boat run, let me know and I'll give you the details.

The video does not do it justice, you really need to see it in person.

Ken_NJ 09-12-2016 08:15 PM

Ken_NJ 09-12-2016 08:39 PM

I would not be able to run gas in the lakes we run at. All to close to residential areas. FE is better for me anyway since I build other scale slow moving models.
