Want a High resolution copy of this pic.
1 Attachment(s)
I was hoping someone on the forum may have a better copy of this pic. The one I have is only 30 kb so basically a thumbnail. Willing to pay a modest amount as i understand photographers gotta eat. Its of a Bertam 38 in a race....
Thanks- wannabe |
If anyone who looks at this thread has any high res pics of Betty Cooks Kaama Scarab doing similar aerobatics I'd be intererested.

I have that same pic on my phone. No idea where I saved it from but it says its 57kb and 640x519. It says its from facebook I will try to see who had it? Great picture
|
I think I got it off this site somewhere. I am hoping one of our history gurus may have it. Darren, Charlie or someone else???
It had to be taken from a copter in a race in the 70's. Thats Sammy James I am sure driving.... That boat is so far in the air I bet the landing was a big crushing kidney killer.... |

I think this is the boat
|
http://imgur.com/wEMqBhi Alittle bigger i think
|
A very cool pic
The combination of high winds and the angle the pic was taken makes it look like the boat is a mile in the air.but if you zoom in on it you will see it was probably a moderate speed launch with not to much air http://imgur.com/wEMqBhi |
That boat was just for sale in Miami, craigslist, needed complete restoration, for 10k. Link is gone now.
And, that is a great photo, with water like that todays races would be cancelled........! |

The 'airborne' pic was KW 1974--- Try to include it on a separate post--may be better resolution? http://i67.tinypic.com/2588efs.jpg |
Altitude records being set at KW--1974??
Red Baron led most of the race, Sammy won-- I think both pics are from Ron Thibedeau--Ron passed away a few years ago--don't know who has his pics--Charlie?? http://i64.tinypic.com/20jk9wk.jpg http://i65.tinypic.com/rkst48.jpg |

Everytime they took off again he could see daylight if he looked down at his feet. They had a bit of a disagreement in the cockpit as Jack was a bit concerned and Sammy thought the best plan was to keep going as lomg as they could. They won the race and pulled into the dock to greet the Governor of Florida etc and get the trophy. As the ceremony went on, Sammy said one of his land crew guys came up and told him to get the Governor and others off the boat as it was sinking. The crew brought the boat quickly back to the trailer and pulled it out and pumped it out. I remember asking .....What happened to the boat? Sammy laughed and said.....Whenever I broke a boat, I called Preston and he would buy it and fix it up and race it! Preston liked good deals. HORBA has the complete photo library of Ron Thibedeau and one of the photos is this one. I am trying to find a way to convert Hasselblad 4X4 negatives to a scan and then I can publish this along with many other amazing photos that Ron took in the years he covered the sport. |

Nice theory! As stated the shot was from the KW race in 1974, in the boat is Jack Stuteville throttles and Sammy James driving. It was the factory entry from Bertram and it was a 38 foot boat. The location of the photo was just off Rebecca Shoals which adds to the history. On that date, a US Geodesic Survey vessel was working, in the log book for that date was the following statement. "Sea conditions at Rebecca Shoals today, wave height up to 18 feet, winds, gusting to 35 MPH."

Tell me how fast you can run headon into a 18 foot swell much less a wind driven 18 foot wave being tripped with a 7 knot oppossing current.? |
Still one of the top 10 pics from back in the day though.

Charlie---I LOVE the Statute of Limitations!!!
Pretty sharp for an old guy. |
I love these early offshore race boat photos. It's fascinating when I think about it....I was born in 1974 when these boats were new. I want to at least restore one of these boats in my lifetime for future enthusiasts to enjoy. My classic Ducati motorcycle restoration is nearing completion....My next project may be a classic offshore boat restoration.

We have it on a future to do list to set up a retail section for great photos. We also have the original George Bartell paintings that Crouse used in his book SEARACE. |
