Dumb Question

I have a dumb question, i know a fair amount about boats, but one thing I am still in the dark about is transmissions. Do all sport boats have them? I am looking at a 454 a local guy is selling with a transmission out of a cig. My boat is a nova spyder with a 454, but I don't see a transmission, like the one in the back of the 454 out of the cig. I tried searching and can't find this answer anywhere... That's how I know it is a dumb question.... But that's ok I just want to understand. Thank you guys!

In a manner of speaking yes, most all sportboats have them - but I think what you're asking is a separate transmission unit vs. the trans build into the outdrive. I'll go out on a limb here that your boat has an alpha or bravo out drive and the Cig has a TRS. The TRS did not have the trans built into it - thus required a separate unit between the engine and drive.

To make you feel better, it's not such a dumb question and I can't give you a comprehensive answer but....

Some stern drives have a transmission, older TRS drive use a transmission. Newer drives like the Alpha and Bravo drives don't have a separate transmission. I think your boat is around the turning point (in age) when TRS were phased out in favour of the Bravos. Alpha drives were used at the same time but bigger engines, like 454 upwards were generally Bravo drives but there have been quite a few with the smaller Alphas.

Many of the high performance drives also use a transmission and I know very little about them! Lol.

Post a pic of your drive and someone will identify it immediately.

Its simple #3,4.5.6's & TRS don't have shifting capabilities so they need a Trany for forward N and reverse, as stated the alpha and bravo's have this function built in

In addition the trany boats use different flywheels, starters, couplers and bellhousing's

Yes my boat is a bravo and the cig was a trs. I understand now, thank you guys very much for your help!
