What 36 cigarette do I have? Help please.

I bought this boat almost 3 years ago and after what started as tweaking a really nice boat turned into a full refit. It is now stripped down to the original gel dark gray or black with an orange boot stripe. The boat is a '72 36 widebody side by side.
Here are two pictures one is down to the gel the other is a couple coats of paint before.

Need an old timer here to shed a light!

rak rua 08-17-2018 09:26 PM

Hard to believe you've owned a Cig for that long and still don't know what it is??
Looks like a cool old boat, nice project. I'm sure someone will shed some light.

That sucks it turned into that much of a project. All In all it will be awesome when done!

h2oboater 08-17-2018 11:11 PM

If this gray Cig was from Michigan it belonged to a friend of mine here on Lake St Clair back in the 80's..

scippy 08-18-2018 12:14 AM

Last I remember you were refitting the cabin and helm, are you now done and moving onto the hull sides?

Ironmanwb 08-18-2018 06:38 AM

It will be basically new when done. I never really tried to figure it out as it is a side by side boat not staggered. But we do think it was raced at one time as we could see that the deck was cut with gauges on both sides and a throttle station on the starboard at some point in its life.

lucky strike 08-18-2018 09:49 AM

How are the holes cut in the transom close together or far apart ?

----Sure looks like a wide body to me. The full length character line in the hull about 6/7 inches down from the rubrail is the giveaway. It will also have a beam dimension of around 9 feet, hence the wide body term!. One of the most iconic heavy water Cigarettes ever built and coveted by a bunch of us! I own a version of it and it will pretty much handle any water ......Bill S

scippy 08-18-2018 12:43 PM

Bill I believe he know it's a wide body, he looking for origins of ownership and it's use thru the years.........the refit has been (is) documented in the Cigarette section.

With all respect , if that's the case then the subject should not have been 'What 36 Cigarette do I have ?' but 'Who's 36 Cigarette do I have ?'

And BTW , I'd take that over anything made today .

we haven't taken the engines out yet and the guy i bought it from rebuilt the transom and recut the holes. The driveline is now on 36" centers vs most are on 33", he had to do this to fit the engines in so the headers don't touch. Here are some pictures of what i currently have . Once we derig it I will get pictures of the transom if it shows us anything.

I dont think it ever had side exhaust or was set up in a staggered configuration. I wish it was but after almost 6 years of looking for a staggered boat i settled on this side by side.https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a0f464a15e.jpg

Sorry for the confusion.

And the only thing keeping me sane is that I keep looking at other boats and I still have yet to find one that I like more!

There were a few side by sides that were not officially "Race Boats," but were actually raced in local races, especially in the South Florida area.

Here is a photo of Don's boat..... that he raced in some of the local races..... and this was a 36 side by side.

Thank you please send more pictures of whatever you have.

scippy 08-20-2018 12:49 PM

Charley That's great photo of Don ....who are the others aboard?......Also, that 36' (and I can't be sure from the photo) doesn't look like a race version 36, but a stock 36'
Besides the race engines and drives in his boats, Did Don fabricate a lighter race hull primarily for some or all of his races?.........Also, in the photo on the port side hull is
"A stables" would that stand for "Aronow stables" ?

Ok the local club races were held by places like the Jockey Club in Miami.

Jim Wynne the 1966 World Champion of Offshore and Barry Cordingley, who was the navigator for Don when he raced his 32 foot Cary The Cigarette in the Bahamas 500 along with Knocky House. So, the three on board were not amateurs by any stretch of the imagination, but the other competitors liked it when they raced so they could tell their friends that they were in a race with.....Fill in the blanks.

Don won this race and coming second in another 36 foot "Pleasure version" was none other than Gene Lanham...He was Doc Magoon's throttleman.

These were "Stock 36's" but they had some missing things like not much of a finished cabin. Were they lighter.? This was before Kevlar, so some layups probably were.... but there was still a lot of guys that really used their boats for trip to the Bahamas for diving etc. No one wanted a hull that was too light just in case.

A Stables..... were the Aronow Stables in Ocala.... that were run by Don's eldest son Michael, and they produced a lot of wining horses out of them

The book is still available....contact me at my email [email protected]

Hijack away. I don't get my panties in bunch like some other people. I love all of the information. Hope I can find out which/what/ who's boat that I have or any other history on it. Any idea how many they made in '72. I can't imagine it was more than 30- 50 boats.

I can't answer any of your questions, but like you, I have an "old skool" Cigarette, mine 1982 35' it's 36 yrs old, but really better than new! . Your 36' is 46 yrs. old and soon to be like new ...to me, it's like owning something that has an ageless design. You'd never know my boat is that age by looking at it, not because it has new paint or interior, but because the design (to me) is ageless......I know it takes deep pockets to have her in a restored condition, but enjoy the ride through it all, "They don't make these iconic hulls anymore!"....just my thoughts!

Ironmanwb 08-28-2018 10:43 AM

Anybody have any other info? Still trying to figure it out.

I can't wait to have it done. It will be worth almost a 1/3 of what I have in it!!!!!:poopoo:
