I experienced the presence of DonAronow..... one photo shows him standing back, watching us on his "Garbrecht / Kieth Black/ Aronow " Unlimited tunnel boat experiment. I still own the "Speed Kills" book..... A lot of assumptions....

I watched the movie tonight and felt it was okay....It made me feel glad that i own a piece of history.....From Thunder boat row, from that era. Its still solid and new 550 supercharged engines about to be installed. My question is where did they find the boat for the movie?
looks like the reg was MO 2279-FR. It had either TRS drives or Bravo # 2 drives.Not sure. Anyways watched it on VUDU cost me $7, so was well worth it .

Watched it last night, wasn't as bad as all the hype. I enjoy any movie with boating scenes. The race through the storm scene was pretty hard to watch but other than that it wasn't terrible. Someday someone that truly understands the story will step up and produce a much easier to watch version. It is a great story but "Speed Kills" ventured far from truth.

That engine cover looks familiar.......latest Fountain Kilo boat. Did it work better for Aronow/ .LOL.

You forgot to mention that he also sold boats to known drug runners, and then decided to rub elbows with HW and sell boats to the Customs Service.

Back in the day, ( '70's & mid '80's ).... I would hear conversations from powerboat guys..... Don would sell Cigarette to some rich guy who wanted to brag that they " owned Cigarette "..... then buy it back for a profit.... then do it again. I also would hear about drug runners complaining that the boat was not as fast as DEA boats. Don would remind them that " You guys are carrying tons of "stuff" in the boat, where the DEA only had fuel".
Even though the DEA was bugging him, I heard that his death was due to "sleeping with the wrong guy's wife"...

But this is what I heard, NOT what I know. He was still a genius. ( Like Picasso...... quite colorful ...... as are many famous personalities )

Quite the gentleman when I met him at our Unlimited Hydroplane race in San Diego with the "Aronow Unlimited" tunnelboat.

Watched the movie this evening...interesting take with some liberties on the truth, but worth the watch fro $7. I agree with the above post, if you aren't familiar with the facts, the movie was a bit difficult to follow...or possibly, knowing the facts made it difficult to follow because we're looking for things that actually happened, but weren't shown. The character development was just OK in my opinion...it showed Don a mans man and the struggles he had with trying to do things himself and without the mafia ties...so I don't think it shed him in poor light...at least not too poor of light. I was boggled why some names were changed (Don, Ben, etc), but Lanksy's name was used.

It was truly a shame that Don was killed, he had a lot more to offer the offshore powerboat industry as a whole...would be interesting to see where he would have taken things...I guess Reggie really filled in the mystique in his absence.

In the grand scheme of things the Fast and Furious movies were more enjoyable from a gear head standpoint. Even if much of F&F was silly talk, at least they were working on cars, talking technical at times etc. There was zilch of that in Speed Kills which left much to be desired. Some technical talk about the hulls, engines, etc. would have made it much more interesting and a better representation of Don's offering to the industry. Couldn't care less that he cheated on wives or stole women from sultans, cheap filler. Moreover, the cinematography of the big storm in the Miami to Nassau race was utterly horrible, unrealistic and of course not survivable for a ship let alone a 30' Cig Boat.
