Trailering a 36 Concept

What truck do you need to pull a 36 Concept?
Can a Nissan Titan 5.6 witha tow package do the job or something bigger like a 2500 series truck?

BUIZILLA 09-09-2008 06:50 AM

oh hell noooooooooo

I'm thinking the 2500 series isn't quite enough to be "safe".....the Nissan is OK if you don't leave the parking lot.

I pull a 36 Concept back and forth from Mi. to Fl. with a New Yukon Denali the short one and it pulls awesome. The trailer has brakes on all axles and this rig does not wiggle or scare me ever. The Denali comes from the factory with air suspension and sits just right with boat attached. The engine is the 6.2 litre. Just an FYI. CHASIN

My father just used my Nissan Titan to pull his 32 concept from Miami to Cape Coral. He said it pulled well. My truck has air bags in the rear and the trailer had electric over hydraulic brakes. A 36 concept is a much bigger boat than the 32......

How often do you need to tow and how far?

Sydwayz 09-09-2008 09:36 AM

Ah, did not know you planned on pulling an OB boat when you originally inquired in the truck section.

With an OB boat like you are talking about, I would DEFINITELY go for a LONG WHEEL BASE truck that is at LEAST a 3/4 ton.

Your boat is going to have a LOT of weight at the very end of the tail, and the very end of the dog. While trailer setup is key, as in tongue weight, and boat placement, you are still going to have that weight back there.

One wrong bump and all that weight at the end of your teeter totter (aka trailer), and the rear wheels of your truck are going to get REALLY light. The more truck you have, the better off you are going to be.

I HIGHLY suggest a 3/4 ton truck with at least the wheel base of a long bed/extended cab or short bed/crew cab. The more truck you have to control that load, the better.

Anybody tried pulling one with either a Navagator or Escalade??

boating37 09-09-2008 10:45 AM

I just looked a 2003 f-250 with a 5.4 liter and 3.73 axle and the trailer weight to pull that was less the the Titan it was 7400lbs. Little confused I picked the boat up with my friends
new Tundra and it pulled the boat fine. I am not going to be trailing the boat all the time it is just for the times I need to pull it out for work or if I am going to do a pokerrun so if I trailer it 4 to 6 times ayear would be alot. The rest of time it will be high and dry stored.

Question if I'm wrong please tell me but
36 5,100 lbs/ engines 1600 lbs /trailer 1100lbs and say 500lbs for extras if I missed something. So thats 8,300 lbs. So say 8,500 the Titan say it pulls 10,000. I should be able to pull it, but I want to be safe about it too.

Sydwayz 09-09-2008 11:54 AM

Trailer is probably closer to 2000 lbs.
Fuel is 6 lbs. / gallon.

You ought to be about right on 500 lbs. for extras on the boat alone, like tools, coolers, anchors, lines, and all the little stuff.
Then you need a jack and spare tire(s) for the trailer.

Remember, when you add passengers and gear to the truck, you subtract from the total weight you can tow. This has to do with the GCWR.

Also, does that tow rating on the Titan have a Weight Distribution hitch restriction? I'm willing to bet your trailer is not currently set up for a WD hitch.

If you are bent on the Titan, I'd suggest a test tow. Truck sales are hurting right now. If they want to sell a truck, tell them you have to do a test tow with it. Get the boat on the trailer, and strap it down well, and do an emergency stop. Let your butt pucker be your deciding factor.

However, I highly advise taking advice from those who have been there. It is very nice to be towing at 66-75% of your total towing capacity, compared to 90% +. (Speaking from experience here as well.)

Brakes are also VERY important. Do you have surge brakes on your trailer, or Electric/Hydraulic? Remember, surge brakes only work when you are going STRAIGHT. If you have any kind of angle/turn between the truck and trailer, your surge brakes don't work, and the weight of the trailer will just push the truck around. All the more reason to have a heavier truck. E/H brakes do not have this issue.

As said in the Trucks forum. Its better to have and not need; than need and not have.

Thank you for all the input, will keep on looking for something to pull the boat .

Towing

I tow my 36 w/ a quad cab 3500 dodge diesel and it tows great. As sydwayz says, take the titan on a test tow. I would defintely get electric brakes on the trailer, and take this to the bank, GET A NAME BRAND TRAILER not a round the town trailer. If I had to do it again I would have got the loadrite trailer. My trailer is a POS.

Good Luck
