looking for best setup on a 36' WITH 2X250's

Hello, I realize I didnt buy a speed demon and Im not looking to ring every last bit of speed out of my boat, but I am interested in getting alittle more out of my 36'

I am currently getting 48 mph out of my setup now and I thing the boat has a little more to give me than that

2002 36' with twin 250 efi Mercs turning 3 blade 19'' stainless props. I believe the engines are turning 5400 rpms and the settings on the engine mounts are in the middle setting of the 5

Any useful help would be appreciated

Thanks

Bob

Something doesn't sound right there. At the Jammin on the James poker run I was running next to a 32 Concept with twin 250's for a good portion of the day. Spoke to the owner after the run and he says it is a 65 MPH boat. I know yours is bigger, but not THAT much bigger...

otis311 07-20-2010 06:18 PM

yeah, I know its slow. It should hit high 50's to low 60's all day everyday. $hit, I can run around on one and still do 30 mph !!

Indy 07-20-2010 08:11 PM

Doesn't Maryland Mark have a similar set up? Haven't seen him post for a while though.

Speed aside...do you like your Concept? Just asking because my next boat will probably be a CC.

Me too. I like the Donzi's and Concepts. 30 footer, twin 250's and I'll be happy.

otis311 07-23-2010 09:58 AM

I have owner atleast 15 boats thru the years including a 31' formula 29' Baja a Top Gun, Tiger and a Gladiator. The Concept is a GREAT all round boat that has many many uses. I have no complaints at all with this boat. I call it my Sport Utility boat. It can do just about everything. It just aint that fast, but who cares !!

Yeah...the 30 looks great for our waters, maybe even the 27 because it can go in the rack at Rex. A couple of Opti's or etecs and years of hassle free boating (relatively speaking of course) on the Sound. Tired of crawling around bilges.

Thanks Otis.

Bob,
Shoot a PM to NOMOGOFAST, and see where his motors are mounted at.

rchevelle71 07-23-2010 02:29 PM

Motors are probably a little deep, I run the same motor on my 24 pantera. I turn a 21 pitch mirage plus to 5400, but the rev limiter is set at 5800, I will be stepping back to a standard 21 mirage, should get a few more RPM's. maybe try raising the motors a notch, and getting a tad bit smaller diameter props??? I realize it is a big boat for 250's, but I run 60 with one tired 250EFI on the little boat at the same RPM as you, I would think you could squeeze 55 out of it easy.

Potomac Fever 07-28-2010 06:16 AM

I agree you should try and contact MARYLANDMARK, he has tried every known prop combination and the best part is he wrote it all down and kept track of it. speed, rpm, mph etc. he was very helpful when I had my 30' lots of knowledge with concepts. good luck

NOMOGOFAST 07-28-2010 11:56 AM

36 speeds

Md Mark has 250xs's, not 250 efi's. Big difference. My 36 has 275 verados and will run 58-63 depending on load. Sounds like you need to raise your motors up one and give that a try. Props sound close.

Potomac Fever 07-29-2010 07:29 AM

IMHO he has alot of knowledge with these boats and set-ups that was all I was saying he helped me with a 225efi set up on a 30', I hope you get your figured out.

wananewboat 07-29-2010 08:27 PM

What will the 36 run with 300s or does anyone have 350s yet?

I think Marylandmark had his 36 with 300 XS's up to 72 MPH. It was listed in his avatar info for a while.

otis311 07-30-2010 08:22 AM

I havent seen or heard from him in some time. Anybody got his number ?? I dont have it anymore.

dkwestern 07-30-2010 02:45 PM

maryland mark has a 32 with 300xs

FeverMike 08-30-2010 11:54 PM

Maryland Mark has a 32.

I had a 2003 36 with 250 EFI's. With stock 3 blade props best I saw on low fuel was 60. Normal load, wife and I with 1/2 tank of fuel 56-58mph was tops. I had the props labbed and that made a little difference but not much. I do remember running at 4000rpm and 40mph was my cruise.

With out seeing your boat, it's hull condition, the props and motors it's really hard to help on over the internet.

Otis,
I had a 2001 36 Concept with Johnson 250's spinning 22 4 blades and was 58MPH on GPS, with the same props but labbed I was right at 60MPH...

boating37 09-02-2010 09:44 PM

You might get a few more mph, but remember they are not built for speed. So look into coast before you start RD because it is expensive.I know I had the 36 with tripple 300xs and spent to much on trying to make it go faster. But great boats lots of fun.Just not the fastest CC around.

CBWaterBoy 09-07-2010 10:14 AM

I have a 36 with twin 300 Merc Verado's and have 21 pitch 3 blade tempest blade props. The fastest the boat has run has been 67.8 on gps. I am going to try it again this year before I pull it out to see if it will do a little more. That was flatter conditions and min fuel two people. The boat will always hit 63 to 65 no problem even with a good load on the boat fuel and full water. Have the bigger trim tabs as well and they defiantly come into play. Wanted to put triples on the boat when I ordered it and did a lot of research on that application and it wasn't worth the extra coast of the motor for the couple of mph more you would get. Also handling would not be as good. My boat I cruise 45 to 50mph. The haul defiantly likes to go quicker in a 2 to five foot chop and rides great in that water as well!! A friend of mine has a 30 with twin 300 Verado's and he runs 80 on gps.

joeya 11-10-2010 07:12 PM

we have a brand new 36 with twin 300 verado running 71.2 mph and customer is not done yet.

CBWaterBoy 11-17-2010 09:19 AM

Joeya what holes do you have the motors in and what kind of props are you running?

joeya 11-17-2010 09:22 AM

That boat is running Hering Performance props and we actually put a jack plate on it.

wananewboat 11-17-2010 07:25 PM

Any pictures of that boat?

Dd24skater 11-18-2010 08:27 AM

I'm running a 34' Baja cc, 2 x 250xs 's, 23" Mirage+ 62mph best day, 60 everyday. Diffrent guy, same boat running 250's runs 55 all day. 48 sounds somethings not right, engine height, props, dropped cyclinder?

engines run great, height and props are definatily an issue.

Setup

First of all ditch the mirage props and switch to tempest plus. Much better bow lift. You will gain 2-3mph. I have a similar hull to yours, but With 300x. I also like the rev 4 props, but the best prop has been the tempest plus. Lab finished bravo with vent holes is also good. You will have to adjust engine height slightly according to whether using 3 or 4 blade props.
Now for something which i have found through testing. These hulls hate small pitched props. Obviously you dont wont to damage the engines running a high pitch prop at low revs. But in my case i can swing 23 and 21 pitch props at almost the same revs with 2-3 mph faster with the 23 props. Must be the better bow lift, perhaps due to different rake? There will be a substantial fuel consumption increase using the larger props, so i usually have 2 sets

good info, how long does it take to change engine heights usually ?? and fuel consumption already sucks !! I burned 200 gallons from FLL to KW and thats just under 200 miles.

CBWaterBoy 11-30-2010 01:15 PM

I did a lot of reasearch when I ordered my boat in 09 and went with the Tempest Plus 21 pitch 3 blade props and the twin 300 Merc Verados. Boat runs great. I am now looking into the six blade Herings and doing research to see how much speed the boat would gain etc. The Hull defiantly likes to cruise and run at quicker speeds. Very impressed with the boat. If there is a significant difference to go with the Herings I will definatly make the investment. Chaudron what holes do you have your motors in? What speeds are you able to hit with the 23 pitch 3 blade tempest plus props too?

Chaudron 12-01-2010 05:57 PM

I have a hydraulic porta bracket so changing the engine height only takes a flick of a switch. This is a great bracket BUT if you run in big seas the hydraulic rams have to be reinforced. How do i know? I had the bracket fail after 14 hours, porta replaced the broken ram and 14 hours later, the same happened again. I had thicker rams and shafts done at a local engineering shop and it now works perfect. Top speed with twin 300x running 1.75 ratio fleetmasters is 73.4mph. These twin engine vees are so much fun! Maybe not the fastest, but great fun. But there is a lesson to be learnt. They will only run so much and then you reach a point of diminishing returns where you will have to fork out so much money to get an additional mile. So i would say, set it up well and leave it there, and enjoy it.

otis311 12-02-2010 07:48 AM

Alright, Im going to find a set of 21p laser 3 blade and start there. I blew out a hub in KW on one of my 19's so its a perfect time to start playing
