adding an anchor locker
 

Anyone have an idea on how to add an anchor locker to a boat that doesnt already have one.

i'll be posting a run down of that process in the "boat painting 101". haven't had a chance to put all the pics together yet but heres a few. not a tough process but it takes a skilled hand. basically rotozip it out and build a lip for it to close on. if the boat has a core its a little trickier but not to bad.

Dave, what did you build the lip out of?Or is that an existing layer that you just took down? That is neat! And did you reuse the piece you cut out or is it a new door? :cool:

yep. i re-used the piece i cut out. if it has a core you have to clear out about a half inch of the core and fill in the void with west systems hi density filler (404 i think). fabbed a lip out of 4 layers of bi-ax and bonded it to the inside.

After making the anchor hatch, do you need to reinforce the hull were the anchor will be lying on or will it be strong enough????

actually this is a deck hatch. an anchor locker would be at the point of the deck. process would be the same but yea the inner structure generally should be strong enough although i would use care to look it over well to make that assumption. all boats are built differently.

Art can you explain a bit further. not quite sure what the cheese cloth thing is about. i only remove the outer edge of the core and use a high density filler to build that surface back in. it makes for a very clean installation and fairly simple to. no need to re-invent the wheel here. :D deck natches like this are very light and over-engineering isn't really necessary. also curious about the shell resin, why would a 48 hour cure time benefit this installation. i am always open to different methods as i know there is a million ways to do everything especially glass work. :cool: :drink:

i also agree the S or E glass would be a great product for the lip. all i had on hand when i did this was a bunch of 1808 :D


one other thing i do use a few other epoxies but for the sake of translating to the general public i tend to refer to west system products because they are the most readily available.

i dont really take it that way, its all good here and i think Art has quite a bit of knowlege in this sublect. besides us glass guys are goofy bunch anyway :D :D :D

by the way Art i would also like to discuss a few things with you as well. most of my glass work has been one off custom stuff or repair related. i am geting more involved in small scale prodoction these days and would like to discuss laminate schedules if i could. :cool: :cool:
