I plan on changing the top stripe on my boat from gray to black. trying to hide the windows, I think they make it look realy dated. I Don't have much experience with paint work other than touch ups and spraying on small cars like model size. I bought some cheap marine specific acrylic laquer. even if its not such good stuff I can replace or go over with better stuff and not be out much. Prep i can do but finish is what I am worried about. Is this somthing a guy can do himself or should I take it to a pro? sorry this is so broad.

You could have a guy remove the wondows for you. That is what I did and man did it make a HUGE difference. Of course if you do that you have to figure out what you are going to do on the inside as well.

If you paint it then I would prep it yourself then have a guy spray it. It wont cost that much and should come out much better.

PS let the guy spraying spray what he normally sprays. Guys get used to a certain type of paint and will be much less likely to screw up with what they know.

Jon is right. prep it yourself and than have someone spray it. if you are looking for a great material that is very cost effective try PPG's Omni line. use MBC basecoat for the black and MC260 for the clear (very easy to buff). if you dont want to go base coat clear coat use the MTK single stage. i doubt you would have more than $75.00 in paint and you will get great results, its a very good product for the do-it-yourselfer.

Right on thanks, I figured it would be more expensive than 75.00 for good paint. I think I will go with the prep myself and have a pro spray it for me. I will post the results too.

if you were to use a product line like PPG's Concept you might have $200.00 + in it but the Omni line is a great alternative. it is a paint line that is geared toward savung a few bucks without compromising quality (much). they cut cost by not having any advertising,color maching or OEM support so it is perfect for overall paint jobs. its actually pretty decent stuff. i dont use it for any of the big jobs but it works great for tossing on a stripe or to. good luck and let us know if you need a "talk through" on prepping :cool:

flatout, all of glassdave's recomendations are good! I would recomend almost any thing other than an acrylic laquer! Laquers will not hold up to the sun and the big problem is when it fails you will probably have to strip it all off to refinish it again because most of the modern urethanes are recomended to not be applied on top of it! Just my 2 cents worth.
