Gluing wood blocks to stringers?????
Maybe glassdave can help....
The wood blocks that the fuel tank straps fasten to, rotted out of my 87 242 formula. I simply need to glue in new wood blocks. What kind of compound should I use?? |
Re: Gluing wood blocks to stringers?????
Hi, this is just my suggestion. If they were glassed in, do it again. The material of choice would be cut from a transom cut-out that should be made from marine plywood. It is strong an won't rot out. Any boat builder or repair facility should be able to give it to you, but let Dave advise you since he is the expert. G$

Re: Gluing wood blocks to stringers?????
Hi G$
They were not glassed in. Just stapled to the stringer then foamed around the tank after it was set in. I found where the water got in... a small hole rubbed through where a screw from the tank strap touched the bottom of the floor locker. From that small hole water ran down onto the top of the tank and soaked these small wood blocks that the straps were screwed onto. Formula emailed: the blocks can simply be glued back and have no structural impact at all, but I didn't ask what kind of glue they recommended. Does something like liquid nails or construction adhesive have any marine capabilities in this situation? |
Re: Gluing wood blocks to stringers?????
HI THERE... I WOULD CUT MY BLOCKS TO SIZE THEN MIX UP A BATCH IF 5 MINUTE EPOXY COMPLETELY COAT THE BLOCKS,ALL SIDES, WITH THE EPOXY SEALER ,, CLEAN UP THE AREA WHERE THE OLD BLOCKS WERE AT THEN PUT A BIT OF THE EPOXY THERE AND STICK THEM TOGETHER .. FASTEN WITH A STAINLESS SCREW TO SECURE ....THEN COVER THE SCREW HEAD WITH A COAT OF EPOXY..... NOT SURE IF THIS WILL HELP YOU OR NOT...
THE TANKS ON MY " 83 FORMULA SC " ARE MOUNTED DIFFERENTLY THAN YOURS ..... RJH... |

Liquid Nail will work, but the best Iv'e seen is 5200!

Re: Gluing wood blocks to stringers?????
Yea, 5200 is superb for sealing but I don't know of it as a bonding agent.

Re: Gluing wood blocks to stringers?????
I just know that we use it on trim tab applications and when one has to be removed from the transom, the gel coat comes off with it! Just an observation. G$

Re: Gluing wood blocks to stringers?????
sand the area under the old blocks and get some west system epoxy, epoxy the new blocks of wood in then glass over the new wood. if formula had glassed over them you woldn't be messing with them now! my cig mistress is 25years old and zero rot any where cuz its a resin bucket and every square inch is covered with resin.
