i would sand with 400 & re-base. not 400p if your using p grade sandpaper you need 600p ck with the paint store with head size the 1.4 may work.

Re: Painting

Faced with the reality that I would have to shoot the base (still might have to) I got my lazy butt off my couch went to the dock box grabbed my hi-speed buffer and a tub of Aqua-Buff 1000...you know the fast cut stuff. I figured since I would have to shoot the base anyway lets see if I could buff the $hit out of it and still have some clear left. After a rather heavy buffing with 1000, I switched to the 2000. Gotta say, I don't think I burned all the way through the clear...yet. It even brought back the section I had sanded with 400 yesterday. The roof is still the worst part, if the Aqua-buff works there I may be able to put off the paint another year.

Thanks for everyone's help. Without it I would have just shot the clear and I'd have a mess on my hands.

If you shot the lacquer on it, you would be stripping it most likely! It would have gotten ugly real fast!LOL G$

Sounds like the clear is degragating that can happen especially on a 13 year old vehicle. Unfortunatly just re-applying clear probably won't solve your problem. Lacquer is a thing of the past and we dont even sell it anymore. If this is the case a sanding and repaint are probably in order.
