Remove Painted Name On Hull!!!!
REWARD: to whom ever can help me get the painted on name off the side of my hull, its a 1987 formula, i amagine the name has been on there for a while, the name is painted on, and ive tried, easy over cleaner, M.E.K., Asecton(SP?), 3M compund, NOTHING, laughed at it,
is there a chemical that will take this off and not hurt the fiberglass?? Or do i have to sand it off, also, maybe i have used the above chemicals incorrectly, so lets hear it, get this name off my boat!!! |
Re: Remove Painted Name On Hull!!!!
I would try gently wet sanding the painted name with 1500...then 2000 grit wet
Then buff with 3m super duty compound |
Re: Remove Painted Name On Hull!!!!
You said you used acetone, but have you tried a hot weather reducer ( ie DT885-895)use a rag to keep the lettering wet for a minute then use a Formica sample sharpened like a chisel (one edge) with #220. this should peel the softened paint off till you see the gel coat. Now you can wet sand as suggested above. Good Luck!

Re: Remove Painted Name On Hull!!!!
Some have had luck with oven cleaner. I would try a paint stripper that is suitable for fiberglass. when in doubt, try a small spot 1st. Once you get it off, you may need to have to rub and/or wet sand to blend in surrounding areas.

Re: Remove Painted Name On Hull!!!!
I have been trying to remove painted stripes and so far the best thing I have found is the soy strip avalible at west marine. It takes a while and the paint comes off in layers but it does not hurt the gelcoat as far as I know. It is sort of an apply , wait and scrape with a plastic blade or razor blade process. Round file the edges of the razor so they don'd dig the gel. good luck

Re: Remove Painted Name On Hull!!!!
I have used Pintoff (sp) I think by Interlux. The problem is that once the name comes off, most of the time you can still see it. The gel coat fades deeply and cant be compounded out. Al so the gel coat wears down leaving the area of the name raised. It can be a real F-er to deal with. I have seen quite a number of hulls painted because of this. Is it a bad name, can you live with it?

Re: Remove Painted Name On Hull!!!!
Sounds like it was sprayed on Imron or similar and not a brush applied lettering enamel. Other than sanding, the only thing I've had luck with against Imron is aircraft stripper-- but that was on aluminum. Dunno what that schtuff will do to gelcoat. Good luck.

Re: Remove Painted Name On Hull!!!!
Do not use regular stripper! PLEASE! It has methylene chloride and will turn the gel to jello  .As said eariler, I have seen names/ graphics removed to a stark color contrast that even block sanding won't remove.(especially darker colors) The kicker is even though the surface is blocked and painted, sometimes an outline of the removed paint will appear after a while.
