Re: Need Help with Outdrive Paint
I still need help! I sprayed the DP40LFprimer today. I used a brand new HVLP gun that I got for Christmas. I got a ton of orange peel. I had to turn down the amount of paint and I bumped the pressure up to almost 20 psi. Got it to spray but it was a very small pattern. Took me forever! What am I doing wrong? I have a regulator at the gun. Should I have thinned the primer? Nothing in the tech sheet about thinning. Can I expect the same with the color? I am going to lightly wet sand before color to try to address the orange peel. It did seem to blend in as it started to dry. It was nice to breath easy during application... I mean did not see a lot of mist and I did have good ventilation and protection. I am assuming that the HVLP gun works that way. I did a much better job in the past with a conventional gun but I'm sure that it was worse on me.

Re: Need Help with Outdrive Paint
Chewey, my experience is that HVLP guns produce "orange peel" finishes. I have used one a while back that produced a decent finish, but until I have to, Sata 90 and I are tight! It sounds like you are on the right track, but I haven't used DP primers in years. Make sure the air tube to the pot is unobstructed even if a new gun.

Re: Need Help with Outdrive Paint
Does that mean that I can expect to get orange peel with color? I can go back to a conventional gun if it will do a better job.

Re: Need Help with Outdrive Paint
Depends if you want to learn with the new gun (and you can reduce the paint to make it lay flat) or if you need to hit a homer, use old tried and true. I think the HVLP is good for base coat, but not my favorite for single stages and especially clears ( depending on where you are spraying when overspray is a major concern.)
