Need hatch built
I need someone who can build me a lighter hatch, or convert to butterfly set up. I would like lightweight material of some sort. Maybe Carbon Fiber.

Re: Need hatch built
I built one out of Starboard, and one out of pvc board. The pvc was lighter, cheaper, and best of all, you can glue it together.

Re: Need hatch built
hows it going Offshore G :D got some cool projects going on right now. finishing up the second hatch out of that mold i just got done with and building a few 18 footers out of a mold that was brought to me. hope you are doing well
Jeff what kind of hatch are you looking for? flat? raised? blower style? |
Re: Need hatch built
Gdave the hatch is not right. It took 3 of us just to raise it up to stab the front engine.
Its an early 80's model 38' Scarab that at one time had butterfly hatches. Now it is one big heavy heavy muther f^cker.........its not right.. he needs a flat style...he is not man enough for blowers......one day but no today |

Jeff what kind of hatch are you looking for? flat? raised? blower style? Need flat hatch for my scarab. I can send dimensions. I need solution to all of this weight. We took out forward motor on sunday. "second time" I don't know what's going to happen if I have to take out the rear motor. This thing has got to weigh over 750-900 lbs. I do need to be able to put people on it though. It is a sun deck. If I could get it to 300lbs or less I would be satisfied. My boat is actually on boat classifieds under "38 Scarab staggerds fresh rebuilds". Look at the pics. I can send better pics if needed. Jeff |

Re: Need hatch built
it looks flat in the pik, with a pad on it, I cant imagine how it weighs 750+ unless somebody used a steel core...if worse comes to worse get some 1/4" ply cris cross the seams, double it up with some west system throw a couple layers of glass over it sand and paint..should be well under 300#

Had to delete earlier reply because I'm an idiot. That Nida-Core looks like good stuff. I'm going to keep looking into it. Had to erase your link because I am to new it says to post a url. |

Here is a hatch we're building for an older Fountain. The original hatch weighs a few hundred pounds and doesn't allow enough clearance underneath for headers and a hi-rise manifold.
We're using Divinycell foam for the core. The plug is made from rigid foam insulation hot glued together. We the "rough" the shape out. Once the general shape is achieved we cover the foam with a heavy layer of Spackle. It is then sanded and shaped to it's finish condition. We then layer up with glass. The foam form is then removed and the core material is fitted. The core is layered in with glass and the whole part is vacuum bagged and cured. This is the general process without going in to great detail. |

Re: Need hatch built
It should weigh in at about 50-75lbs
The Spackle is the same stuff you get at Home Depot for mudding drywall. The part is cored with Divinycell foam. A hatch like this will hold two men across a 4'x8' span without any problem. It's strong and light weight but it isn't cheap. Once the foam is laminated it makes for a great structural component. Check this spec sheet out; http://www.diabgroup.com/americas/u_...pdf/H_DS_U.pdf |
Re: Need hatch built
This hatch is now in a slow cure, we just layed it up this AM. I'll take more pics tomorrow.

Get to work on that boat and get off the internet.!!!! |
Re: Need hatch built
looks great. what are you using for strength? Lets see more!!
|
Re: Need hatch built
Lofty, could you use the foam you used to make the mold your core material? Then use a heavier glass mat for more strength? Just curious... The hatch looks great.
|
Re: Need hatch built
Bottoms Up, using Divinycell core. When laminated it is VERY strong.
jdub, we could use the core to make the mold but that would be costly and make it hard to control the part thickness. We also want to use as little glass as possible to keep weight down. We use a grid scored material for the curved areas. The core is grid scored in both length and width directions and a glass-fiber scrim is applied. This allows the core to readily conform to the contours of molds and curved surfaces without the build-up of internal stresses in the laminate. We then lay up the outer layer of multi directional cloth with as little resin as is practical. The part is then vacuum bagged to remove any entrapped air that could weaken the structure. Once it's cured you can easily walk across it without any damage. |
Re: Need hatch built
What thickness Divinycell do you use?
|
Re: Need hatch built
depends on the area. The center of this hatch gets a 3/4 layer and 1/4 grid scored around the scoops. We'll be using a 6" rib across the front edge and a 3" rib across the back edge to provide some more rigidity.
