Paint Removal

Any opinions on the best way of removing the factory painted stripes without damaging mt gel coat?

I had asked a similar question and someone mentioned EasyOFF ovencleaner?

It all depends on what the strips are made of? Easy Off works for aftermarket oil based paints, names on the transom?

If we are talking about stripes painted on by the manufacturer you have to sand them off. Mask outside the stripes with masking tape and block them off with some 320 grit paper. Bring that to 600-2000 and buff. Be sure to stop with the 320 when you reach the original gel coat.

This is a good project for the weekend worrier, if you need any help feel free to give me a call.

I'm considering this as well. How thick is the gel coat, generally and how high is the risk of burning through the gel with the sand paper? If I was to go through the gel, is it an easy fix?

You are nucking futs:D:D:D

Just kidding of course. From all the wet sanding I did on the one side and deck, I can tell you that the paint comes off a lot easier than the gel coat. I highly doubt you would go through the gel. I do think that the gel under the paint will be a lot more white and you will see all the outlines of where the paint was removed. I actually thought about doing it a few yeras ago also, but decided against it for that reason.

Thanks man. Pepe said the same thing. He said I'd be better off painting it. Fortunately for me, I've got more ideas than time... Otherwise I'd end up like Tomcei! :D
