Repaint Stripe

I want to repaint the "pink" stripe with black on my PowerQuest 260. It's gel coat, can auto shops do this if I purchase black gel coat, and what is the approximate cost?

Thanx

I have done simple color changes like that and its not to terribly complex. It would have to be painted over with an automotive grade finish, Gelcoat would not be the way to go.

If its just the one stripe you want to cover i cant imagine it being more than a few hudy, maybe five hundred tops and thats on the steep side.

I would spend a little more and get them all redone. Maybe a richer purple, change the pink one to an orange/yellow burn/fade and the two teal ones to a grey fleckstone or granite effect. (did one almost exactly like yours a few years ago and it looked great and you are fifteen hundred miles away so it should be ok :D).

I am also agreeing with glassdave on using paint and not gel. I think he hit it just right with the color combo he suggested, it would be a nice update for your PQ.

I think silver for the stripe would look better.

I'm not sure what year your boat is but I am almost positive that the stripes are painted from the factory in DuPont Chromabase. Let me know and I can let you know for sure. I also concur paint it.

I had a 1998 powerquest Enticer and now a 1997 Avenger.
All stripes were done in gell coat on them.

Yes from the factory, in the gel coat.

I'm getting really good recommendations from several people around Dallas of a local Vinyl Designer, I might take it to him and have him slap one on. Not sure yet on the vinyl, but a local auto painter said if he where to paint it, the paint constantly in the water won't hold up like the strip following up to the bow. Gotta do some thing, I can't take another summer of pink.

It will hold up fine using the right paint and as long as it is not left in the water for weeks at a time. Almost all manufacturers use paint for graphics.

It's never in the water more than a day, I'm on trailer. I'll get quotes both vinyl and paint, and see what the bottom line is.

boats are painted all the time that stay in the water, so thats B/S, I would sand with 220, mask off and paint with interlux one part poly, follow the instructions with a foam roller and tip off with a brush, sand lighty between coats, 2 coats, let dry few weeks water sand and buff, will look like sprayed...done it several times..Rob

bert4332 01-15-2009 10:59 PM

I would love to, but I am truly a master of doing things twice. I know I'll **** it up and I'm afraid with something like that it would just wind up costing me more to have someone fix my mistakes.

Ok I'm most likely gonna try this out, if I **** it up, it shouldn't be that much more work for someone to fix.

EZ are referring to the flattening agent when you said one part poly? How do you sand with 220 and not effect the adjacent colors? That seems to me to be my biggest challenge. I think I'm gonna keep it simple and go with black for the big stripe and silver over the teal

Mask off around everything you want to sand then sand away. Kinda like a coloring book, just stay inside the lines, or tape in this matter.

Just an idea, but maybe put a vynl stripe on it and let it go?? You could do diff vynl stripes and see the color you like best??

Actually a bright Silver/chrome vynl stripe would look very cool
Just an idea

you can probably wrap it for a pretty good price. then in another 5 years when that is out of style just re-do it.

Griff 02-06-2009 02:26 PM

How much of the teal and pink is in the cockpit interior????
If its got much of both colors in the cockpit, its not going to look right if you eliminate both colors on the hull sides.

bert4332 02-06-2009 06:36 PM

Not much at all, a little patch right below the glove box and on the hatch. Unfortunately it's has all three colors.

Most of my coloring is purple. Gotta price out the vynl, it's gotta be cheaper to paint?

bert4332 03-20-2009 12:26 AM

I just got my boat back tonight, I had the "berry" stripe changed to silver and the teal changed to black. I'm having my new upholstery, hatch with head rests, back and bench installed tomorrow morning, I'll have pics up tomorrow.

Graphics, $601.00 otd installed
Upholstery $650.00 otd installed

a few pics of the hatch:
