Is it just a flat piece? Probably just lay down some 1808 with the chop side down and maybe toss on a layer of a light finish cloth to top it off.

Dave it's not all flat. The top is and it has a lip around the outside edge 13/4 inches by 3/4 around the outside. What's 1808 and finishing cloth.I've used fiberglass before but don't know how to tell what's what ,meaning the proper names. Thanks JOHN

John , round ( sand ) the outside edge so the glass will roll over it , which will make for a better layup with less air and i think that 1708 will be just fine for your application with 4 oz chesse cloth ( finish fabric ) or even 10 oz depending on what you prefer because one is lighter then the other .

Is wood the best thing to use for the structural core is there better materials out there? Something that might be lighter and more rigid?
