My boat is gel, but I used Acetone, it's cheap and worked really well.
|
I use WD-40

3m makes a glue remover, spray on wipe off. You can get it at most paint supply places. I can look tomorrow and get the numbers off the spray can.

Guys. Where do you come up with this stuff? Acetone???? Read the label. Specific useage and wow, look at the ingredients and warnings. I thought for a minute that I was on Speedbake.

I dont know if its too late or not, but if they are vinyl stickers, use an eraser wheel! It can be found at most auto parts stores in the body/paint section or any auto paint house should have them. Looks like a disk about 4-5"diameter, 5/8ish thick, has arbor to chuck up into a drill and is made of pencil eraser type material! Works awesome! Never will I attempt to use a heat gun or solvent ever again, does not damage paint and works fast. Good luck.

Goo Gone will work on the adhesive as well. Works better if you use the spray bottle, give it a few squirts, let it soak and then wipe it off.

+1 on the Rapid remover, just go to a local sign shop and buy a gallon. It won't hurt the paint or gel. I have been using it for years. Too late for the wheel if you already have the vinyl off. It's also very easy to burn gel and paint with one.

I dont know what it would do to a boats gel, but by far the best adhesive remover I have ever tried, without a doubt, was 3m electrical contact cleaner. It was pretty amazing how well it worked. I didnt even spray it directly on the surface, I sprayed it on a rag and then wiped, one swipe took all the residue off.
I used it to remove the adhesive residue left over from the stupid ass operating system stickers on my Laptop (tough stuff), so I know it wont harm plastic. |
I use lighter fluid, the Napthalin cuts the adhesive but isn't hot enough to hurt the gel coat. I've seen Acetone and Goo Gone cause plastics to yellow over time. most of the adhesive removal products have Xylol and Tolulene in them which will hurt paint, plastic or fiberglass.

How well did the Rapid Tack work after it was in the water for a few times?
Works great, once it is dry the vinyl sticks as good as if you didn't use anything. |
acetone won't hurt the gel..but I would worry about the paint !!! been using the rapid remover for years...works the best and is water clean up after..have a hose ready to clean up after..Rob

Yes 2 different fluids from the same company, as Wildman said.
Rapid Tac is an application fluid that aggravates the adhesive and actually improves adhesion while allowing you to move the graphic before squeegeeing to expel the fluid and "set" the graphic. The remover is an orange oil based product that breaks down adhesive and gel's it. We usually spray it on then wait a few and scrape the majority off with a plastic edge then spray it and wipe clean. |

however removers aren't just making the surface slippery and then being rinsed out, they actually have a chemical reaction with the surface as their job is to purify it without damaging it. one you do whatever you need to do, you can accomplish the same by using isopropanol, which is the main ingredient of isopropyl alcohol just diluted, full strength and a clean rag will also stop static while painting ;) |
