Bilge Fairing compound??
 

Hello,

Wanting to learn what type of fairing compound is the best for the engine compartment for an older offshore boat?

Also anyone know the process in which fairing an engine compartment is tackled??

the 22 Apache scout we are re doing is getting a spiffed out motor compartment.

I'm not sure what you mean by "fairing". Are you talking about a cleaning agent?

You are going to need to grind the existing surface and clean it to remove all traces of grease and dirt. Use 407 filler from West System or an equivalent filler with either vinylester or epoxy resin. When you have the surfaces faired to your satisfaction use "Bilgekote" from Interlux to paint the surfaces.

i usually blow a heavy waxed gel in there and sand that down in 80/180 and then blow is a topcoat of white gel with Duratech.

wondering what OL uses or cigarette et al. I would like the material to hold up without cracking. I like the gel coat idea. However there is major print with the fat matt so i may need to knock some of it down. these apaches where built to last...

I am trying to accomplish a finish similar to a lip ship 20 cigarette...

Exactly, either Gelcoat or even Awlgrip on top of that gelcoat fill system, common chemical backbone (Gelcoat on top of the laminate), Midnight Express used that system for years.

Nice, Thank you both!! Would you also use a primer after the gel coat and prior to the awl grip spray? and would you be spraying the entire process? I can't wait to try this on the apache scout!

You'd be surprised what you can fill with this method, it's worth the hundred bucks for a gelcoat dump gun to. I normally knock the big stuff down with an angle grinder and fifty grit then finalize the surface with eighty. You can whale on the waxed gel and after it cures it sands about as easy as anything you'll find. I'm not sure about the Awlgrip system but if I used anything As far as a paint finish I would use a like colored sealer maybe DP48lF.
