Epoxy or gelcoat?

2000 36' skater. The hull bottom portion is starting to separate between the gelcoat? And the fiberglass. I have tried A two part epoxy with little luck. It comes off after one times use. What needs to be done to properly repair this? There are small areas where the rail sits on the trailer where I have the most problems. Thank you

epoxy requires a 100% mechanical bond, in other words it will have almost zero bond if not prepped well. if you are trying to squeeze epoxy into a delaminated gap the onside surfaces of the delam will offer no real bond. any repair needs to be completly ground out/down to be done right.

At least your not missing a 3" x 3 foot racing stripe..... And yes Dave, i resisted the urge to use the 30 gallon drum of west systems that was in the corner of the garage..1990 vintage...

my question is why is a 2000 hull delaimating.was it damanaged?

Unfortunately the bottom has taken a lot of abuse since 2000, Rack storage beats it up, on and off a make shift cradle, on and off the trailer. Unless you keep in on the trailer full time the bottom takes a beating.

ouch, yes rack storing is very hard on the bottom, especially cored boats. Had man many boats go through my shop with large blistered de lams caused by the repetitive high pressure spots from lift forks. Seems even harder on thin highly technical lay ups.

Trailer life can beat it up also. I can post some pics later this week. My boat had a 4 bunk steel trailer its whole life until a few months ago, then I replaced it with a 2 bunk aluminum trailer before I moved down here to the salt water. Last weekend I decided to clean the sea growth off and wax the bottom of the boat and found stress cracks in the gel where the old bunks supported the hull once I got it clean. So add another thing to my list of stuff to do at the end of this season when I do a full re-rig.
