Gel coat

Thunder 2013 10-12-2013 09:53 AM

Not sure how a gelcoat will hold over the old gelcoat, besides i i bought a 33 years old speed boat as a project and side has been painted originally from manifacturer and still shines like new,but not the gelcoat. So i think paint will require less maintanence as far as buffing and waxing!

Gelcoat on the running surface (bottom) and paint on the deck and sides.

Im going to be redoing the bottom of my boat this winter and thought about using the interlux VC performance epoxy... any thoughts about that?

I can't comment on the VC, but I just went through this with my Donzi CC. The general consensus from the hull truth crowd was that if I wanted a white bottom paint that would not yellow or grey over time to use Pettit Vivid. From reading thorough the description of the VC, it sounds like its designed to do the same thing as Vivid, only its an epoxy base. I'm currently in the process of wet sanding it, its a very hard paint once it cures. I wouldn't want any part of trying to wetsand epoxy to a flat shiny finish. Vivid, also comes in several base colors and is tintable to match color. I got lucky and the white was pretty much spot on the with the gel coat color of the rest of the boat.

I have not look at interlux vc yet,as i am still thinking what should i use paint or gelcoat?the problem if i decide to re gelcoat is that i have to flip the boat and i really don't feel like doing this.let me know how it is after you done with the paint job!
