Transom Repair

Getting ready to do replace the transom on my XK and I can't find any of my bookmarks and the search has come up with nothing. Someone on here had a really good post about start to finish transom replacement on what I think was a yellow donzi with black stripes. Anyone remember it? Or does anyone have some good write ups bookmarked? I know the general idea, but I forgot some of the details. Thanks

David

Just go back to older threads in this section. There are plenty with lots of input from GlassDave.

Thanks. I read back through and wasn't able to find the one I was looking for. I'm cutting out everything today so I'm sure I'll have questions soon enough.

Getting the old one out is the worst part of the job and the worse the transom is the easier the job will be,

Well, the bottom part came out easy enough but the top is being a pain. Two questions, there is a 1/4" of a hard but brittle material between the plywood and hull, what is it and how do I remove it? Second question, I've always heard the stringers are hollow on these boats and that appears to be the case. Is there a way to fill the void directly against where the transom will go to avoid any moisture coming in through the stringers and into contact with the wood? I'm headed into town to get a disc for my grinder. I think I read 36 grit to remove dry wood, but unsure about the harder material.

a 36 grit flap disc on a 4.5 inch angle grinder is your friend.

Got it out with almost no problems. There is a bit of delamination and it looks like I went through the hull in one spot. Nothing like making extra work for yourself!
