Worn out Gel Coat Needs Help

My boats gel coat was neglected when I bought it. it was stored outside and I guess it had been wet sanded a few times. Its pretty thin. The boat is still white and just very dull. I tried to wax it to get a shine out of it and It didnt work. I used some stuff from the auto parts store, some sort of marine wax they sold. I plan on getting the boat painted in the winter, its a velocity 280 if that matters. is their a product out there that I could use to make it shine for one more summer, the sides of the boat look great, its just the tip is pretty dull, if you need pics i can take some tomorrow, I dont feel the gel coat is savable but It would be nice if it didnt look like ass for a few months.

I'm not a painter, but I wouldn't add wax to something I was going to paint this winter. The pores have been opened already by wet sanding. Might have to bite the bullet live with the dullness for the summer. Or just use a quick detailer for that weekend shine.

I'm no expert but it's hard to tell without looking at it.

Hand waxing will most likely not bring back a shine most of the time. You might need a high speed buffer with some polishing compound.

Completely concur with Rookie .
If I knew I was going to be painting in a few months time the last thing I would be doing is applying waxes or compounds now .
This will come back to bite you. The amount of time that's going to be spent de-waxing and then seeing all the pores and pimples with wax , etc still in them open up on the first primer coat is going to drive someone mad and up the prep time considerably.
