ALPHA 1 drive question
I am a Bravo/TRS -guy so
I have a question or two and I hope someone can help. In the process of putting the engine back in.... 1) I went to put the rear engine bolts back after a long block job and there are no nuts in the holes - I realize (or think) that there are some kind of fender washers in there but nothing - could they have fallen out? 2) I had the drive in neutral when I took it out - I put it back and now I can't select reverse or neutral - Do I have to yank the sucker back of? The drive shaft is tighten than a nuns #$## Thanks Apha 1 people!!! |

On std rotation alpha's the drive has to be in fwd gear to remove and install. The shift fork in the bell housing has to align with the shift lever that protrudes out of the drive #21 is the fork, 22 is the lever http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...c=BELL+HOUSING On l/h alpha's, the shifter has to be in reverse. |
Ohh
So the nuts (#15) might have fallen in the bilge. Can I just purchase another nut or is it a special "fender washer/nut" I think I can get my hand in there?
I did align the drive selector, but the shift cable was off the linkage (engine was removed) so I didn't really know where nuetral is/was/ Do you think I can finess the cable into the right place with removing the drive again? THANKS!! you a blessing- but I am not out of the woods yet http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_Pictures3.asp?dnbr=%2099964&ivar=images/CRUISER/99964/18759.png&inbr=2203&bnbr=20&bdesc=TRANSOM+PLATE+AN D+SHIFT+CABLE[/url] 2. The bilge is where they usually end up.
They're fine thread elastic lock nuts, not shure of the size though....they're at least 1/2". If the shift linkage/cable going to the drive is kosher, you should be able to adjust the barrel on the shift cable to get proper cable travel. |
I have the bolts in my truck, so I can buys new ones -
Yes the barrel wil not go back into the bracket slot, Shouldn't I be able to yank it into neutral? All I have is drive. Would I be welcome to call you when I get to the job on Wednesday? |

I'll be in meetings the next few days.... not going to be real easy to get a hold of.:( The shift cable should move with relative ease. If it's not wanting to move, it's either pinched, seized, or something's jacked up in the fork area, or, where item # 31 in this pic. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...ND+SHIFT+CABLE connects to the lever in the bell housing. Probably the best thing to do, is take the drive back off, and see if the cable moves freely, if it does, you need to look at the 2 areas I mentioned. |
you did put the spring things and new fiber washers in didnt you?? and those shift cables are touchy on an alpha..the least bit sticky or out of adjustmant will mean lots of stalling when shifting (docking) ... pull the drives back off, check cables, place shifter in forward, place drive in foreward and have somedoy hold a little tension on the propshaft to keep it in foreward then slide it back on, take your time and make sure the shift fork enehages correctly when its going on...

I just removed the outdrive - the springs and forks stay on the gimble assembly. I think it slipped out of Drive. The cable is free, I just can't put the barrel back in the slot - I will get back to it Wednesday I hope. Would you be able to take a quick phone call once I get there?

I had a simular issue once. I put an impeller in and had the shift lever timed wrong in the drive. This can only happen if you seperate the upper and lower. If you didnt seperate the upper and lower, I think you would be ok.

No just the ourdrives upper - I will be back at it Thursday.
