Any ideas, 496 want to add oil temp

Anyone have any ideas as to where i could add a eng. oil temp sending unit to the motor, the gauge is no trouble can put that anywhere, but not sure where to put the sending unit.. I have heard the best place is to drill and tap the oil filter, however i have dana marine exhaust and the bracket mounts to the riser studs, which doesnt make it very easy to get out, its a pain in the butt, so id rather not if i can avoid it.

Also im curious if i used a temp laser gun like for automotive or A/C and aimed it at the oil filter or one of the oil lines would i get a ver accurate reading?

+1 on the oil filter or the side of the block actually next to the original filter place.
There´s already provisions for it there on the upper side of it.
Right lower corner...

Yes, I have done that with my laser temp gun....aimed it at the oil lines going in/out of KE Thermofilter and got accurate readings. That thing is really a great little tool to have---takes all the guess work out of everything!

Also, be careful when adding pipe fittings when mounting oil sending unit. A friend of mine just kicked a rod out the side of the pan---they found that the weight of the sending unit and the pounding of the boat had caused it to completely break off. The fitting was made out of aluminum...I guess brass or steel would be better.

In the block for the most accurate usefull temp. I mounted mine there.
