572 oil coolers - SIZE MATTERS?
What's a good size to run for an oil cooler - I have a 572 c.i. 500 EFI and my builder said the stock coolers are to small?
Thanks |

Read this and note the comments on the restrictiveness of stock cooler-
http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...3&page=1&pp=20 Not only do the stock coolers not have the capacity to remove much heat, they restrict your engine's ability to stay well-oiled. Also, pay particular note to the restrictions imposed by 45's and 90's in your plumbing. Always use a sweeping elbow. While you're there, plumb in a thermostat. |
OIL COOLER - Must read
Chris,
Thanks for bringing this tread up - it will save me thousands of dollars and keep me in the water Greg |
Why that thread isn't a sticky in Tech, I don't know. I pass that link along 3 or 4 times a week.

That is the cooler that I changed to. I am running a stroker 454 -496 I also changed everything out to -12 an lines and aeroquip fittings and changed the oil filter mount and filter out to a K&N 5001. My oil temp runs about 195 after a long cruise.

So what to use above 700 HP?
I have two Teague units (American industrial heat exchanger) And I can get up to 270 degrees after some hard runs. Cruising is 230. I suspect I am either not getting enough water in (XR sportmaster pick-up) or I am pumping it through too fast and need to restrict my water out flow (all size 12 exiting each header). All the above plumbing rules followed for both oil and water BTW. Size 12 oil lines and thermostatically controlled. I use V-Twin as a safety margin. Any other suggestions? |
