Powering a lcd tv

Wanting to install a 22" Vizio in the berth but not sure of best method for power. Dont think i want to use an inverter due to heat &/or power cord backing out. How have others accomplished this? I was thinking if its possible to get schematic & solder power wires straight to the board.

It depends on how the TV is wired. all the ones I have seen have a regular power cord, which means the power supply is inside. that also regulates voltage.

If by chance it has an external power converter box, like a printer or laptop does, you have a chance.

From the pics ive seen, there is no external brick. Just normal power cord. I guess i will keep researching on how its done.

Some of the older units will have a external power supply. If you can find one that would be the way to go.

2 Attachment(s)
I mounted an inverter under the rear seat and ran 120V extension cord up to the cabin ...you want the inverter as close to the batteries as possible.... Actually I ran a cord up both sides of the boat so I have 120V on both sides of the cabin. I used 1500 watt inverter which is way overkill ...most LCD's draw less than 100w ... Mine is 15" with a built in DVD player and draws about 50 watts ....m

If I understand this correctly, you'd just be making the plug in on the back more secure. I don't see that plug coming loose though myself. Since you don't want to use an invertor, that TV will only work while plugged into shorepower for AC power.

My Sharp Aquos uses the external power supply cord. I just bought the correct plug for the DC jack and hardwired the TV to my cabin power. Many of the TV's use different input requirements, ie 13, 18 VDC... mine just happen to be a 12VDC unit.

Thanks for the pics offthe front, i guess running an extension cord to an inverter is what i may have to do.

It probably wont backout, i just try & over-engineer everything- which normally gets me in trouble. I didnt want to use an inverter because i wanted it to run straight DC.

Hmm, i will keep looking at different brands & maybe i can find one w/ an external psu. An Aquos is out of my budget, but there may be other chinese versions out there. If not, it doesnt sound like an inverter is a big deal after all.

Thanks.

I just went to BB and CC and started pulling the TV's off the shelfs looking for the ones that had the ext. power supply cord. The ones that did, then looked at the power input label requirement for the 12VDC rating. (Can't go by the manufactures web sites specs. as they always call out 110VAC since the TV's come with the ext. AC power supply)
I think the smaller ones were more likely to be 12V, while the larger ones seemed to be higher. Mine is either a 13 or 15". I forget.

BDiggity 03-03-2009 09:09 PM

Well my current inverter is as old as the boat, & as far as i know only runs off shorepower. i think i am going to replace it w/ a Xantrex that can run off batts as well as shore. plus it looks cooler. :D

Why would you need something to convert DC power to AC, if it requires AC to operate?
Your boat have a battery charger?

maybe it is a charger, i assumed it was some sort of inverter. but now that you mentioned it, makes sense that i wouldnt need an inverter if running of shore.
i am going up to the storage area this weekend & will get pics & try to find out exactly what it is.

Dude, that TV in my boat has a 12v connection on it already along with the 110v circuit. It has a built in DVD player too.
I think it is a Sony, but I don't know. Get Crownman to look in there for you. My boat is at his place.

No, that was the old one. The new one is 19 or better inches. Got it 2 Christmases ago. I don't think you have seen this one.

yeah saw those, but want to use a stand alone so the kids can have their options. this one has an aux connector to plug an ipod in to. so they should be able to watch dvd or listen to their music from berth speakers & we can have our own music in the cockpit. i will have an audio selector to switch the input source to the amp from either the dvd or receiver.
well thats how it looks on paper anyway....

US1 Fountain 03-04-2009 09:42 PM

That's how I wired mine up.
A single switch that either selects the amp turn on lead that powers the amps and speakers in the cockpit for some outside rock'in, or selects the 4 cabin speakers only using the head units internal amp for those speakers using the speaker wires from the head unit for watching tv/dvds or listening to music inside w/o any power hunger amps. (long sentence :) )I used a micro switch and was limited to the number of wires that could connect to it. All that I found were just for 4 wires leads max. I needed 5 ( amp turn on lead and 1 of the wires from each of the 4 cabin speakers. So I just used a 4 pole relay to make/break the cabin speakers leads and triggered that relay with the micro switch.

The A/V jacks have since been eliminated when I mounted the TV permantly and also ran a wire to hook up my ipod touch at my dash.

that looks sharp. sounds similiar to how i will try to wire mine.

I used a power inverter. Nice to have for cell/PDA/Laptop chargers, surefire battery chager, etc...I also have a DVD player that runs off it. Here is the one I used - plenty of power for the uses I described.

Here's the 19" Sharp LCD installed:
